Forums - Website Topics - 10 Ten suggestion: Best blatant game copycats.

I was with you until God of War. Sure it borrowed some things from previous games, just like every third person shooter after Gears jacked its cover system and every FPS stole Halo's regeneting health. That doesn't make it a "blatant copycat". If God of War wasn't something totally new and amazing it wouldn't have risen above its inspirations to become the unchallenged leader of its genre.

Switch it with Forza Motorsport. Microsoft made that game with a copy of GT3 and a piece of tracing paper.

Forza Motorsport is indeed a blatant copy. Its just casual friendly gran turismo.

God of war is the same exact thing though. It is a casual friendly Devil May Cry except with a different setting.

Just because I know someone will yell, by casual I mean casual compared to the other game in terms of difficulty.

People need to simmer down. Just because a game copied ideas or mechanics from another game doesn't make it bad. In all honesty it's just praising the game that's being copied if anything. Look at the rise of QTEs after Shenmue and the rise of multiplayer modes after Xbox Live became a big hit. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery guys.

Edit: To respond to the OT, Lost in Shadow is essentially a mish mash of Echochrome and Ico.

I know this is really going to cause some people to scream and shout, but uncharted lifted it's core platforming gameplay directly from the later tomb raider games, the gunplay/cover system was then lifted from gears

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Name MOVE and Kinnect launching titles and you get tons of copycats...

Oh, wait. Right. This is about copycat games that were actually good.

Uncharted is the best Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones and Gears clone ever.

Also Goldeneye 007(Wii) is a pretty neat Modern Warfare clone.  That's why I call it Modern Bond.

Pixel Art can be fun.

at the OP, a Ninty fan like CTR??? Has hell frozen over?? but seriously, kudos to you for recognizing quality kart racing games. There were alot of kart copiers on PS1, hell even Square had one, and they all blew. Except CTR, so for those who couldnt get N64(like me) this was a god send I still play it on my PS1.

And Alundra, hell yeah thats Zelda copycay, but dammit, its just as good, played it for the first time on PSN a couple weeks back.  Call of Duty was straight up ripping off the whole World War 2 thing from Medal of Honor

Fan=/=fanboy (I used to be one years ago, but dropped it after seeing what an ass I was). My issue is developers not being fair with Wii customers when we've shown we will buy their games, as long as they are given to us (Goldeneye, CoD, even The Conduit).

Also, you can see from my owned game list (which is not complete, it needs the PSP games added) that I'm a fan of a lot of varied things in gaming.

Back on topic, I still seem to be the only one to actually post five games in order. That is how the VG Chart's voting is supposed to work.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

@masschamber  i am a huge Uncharted fan, but im not going to yell at you,Uncharted is pretty much a better Tomb Raider. Anyone can see that.

@SmokedHostage  I agree 100% percent about GE Wii, especially the online its pretty much COD lite. Its like Eurocom took COD chicken cut off the fat and some meat and your left with the essence of COD, im not dissing it thats my fav Wii game right now. I think it makes it more challenging

@lordtheknight  I was a huge SEGA fanboy, but we know how that turned out, now i just go with the console with the most variety and I pick up a second to get some off exclusives. IT was PS2/GC last gen and its PS3/Wii this one and both portables. Im seeing pattern

Hm... for me.

Valkria Chronicles.  People think the movement system is new.  Zed Two's Future Wars did it first though, AND had destructable terrain and jumping.

and

Final Fanasy Tactics, a giant "ripoff" of the Ogre Battle series.  Right down to the story.  Of course the same man made both.  Amusing though that the game they ripped off is being re-released.

Those are the two that come to mind.

Gameloft makes great copycats for ios devices. Most of their games are blatant copies of the most successful franchises.

WoW is pretty much just an EQ clone and in turn has spawned quite a number of copycats. Diablo was copied so much it became it's own genre (Diablo-clone). Dota has been copied a bit too, and the clones (Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, etc.) are referred to as Dota-clones.

GoW is a copy of DMC. I'm not really sure how anyone can deny that.

Nothing wrong with copying, the copies are sometimes better than the original. Then at other times, they are worse *cough* League of Legends *cough*.
