Forums - Gaming - Against the grain- Why does Microsoft fail in Japan?

I just wanted to open a small parentheses. Purchasing local products over foreign products doesnt necessarily mean you are xenophobic.

Becuase they don't know nothing about the Japanese market; and they seem to not care. They dont release many games suited for gamers overthere. The only games that were a success were games like Blue Dragon.

I knew you would be going to disappoint me with this thread, but you did it in a bigger way than I expected. I suggested that you should write about Microsoft's difficulties to succeed in non-English speaking countries, this does not equal Japan.

Until some months ago the common explanation would have been very American-centric software, but with the recent launch of Kinect, including "neutral" software as well as identical "You are the controller" ads all across Europe, there would have been some new data to add to the equation. Kinect seems to have had negligible impact in non-English speaking countries and looks to have fizzled out pretty quickly.

You missed the mark completely with this thread. Well okay, you talk about Japan which is a non-English speaking nation, but... meh, just meh.

...I'm not certain why I even try anymore

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

It's a mix of marketing, line up, and brand name.

This generation Microsoft did a respectable job of wrapping up Japanese exclusives early on, but while franchises like Tales and Star Ocean were announced for 360, franchises like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid remained exclusive to ps3.   On top of that, these games were really only timed exclusive, and were announced for ps3 soon after they released on 360, with plenty of extra content.  What few true exclusive IPs Microsoft released were poorly marketed, and thus were unable to offset these losses.  Just look at Mistwalker.  Nintendo's been hyping up the Last Story for months, doing numerous interviews with the "makers of Final Fantasy" like Sakaguchi and Uematsu in Famitsu.  Mistwalker's IPs on 360 didn't receive near that level of coverage, which is probably why the Last Story's first week of sales were higher than Lost Odyssey's lifetime sales in the region.

Given they eventually gave up on contracting Japanese exclusives through out 2009 and 2010, Microsoft lost what little momentum they had going in Japan, which led many of the hardcore gamers they had won over in 2007-2008 to switch to ps3.

Such weak tactics aren't going to work against incredibly entrenched brands like Nintendo and Sony in their home market, especially when those companies still have the biggest IPs of the region exclusively ontheir platforms (Mario, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Gran Turismo) and everything else is multiplat.

Oh, and there's Xbox Live.  Japanese gamers aren't exactly the biggest fans of online multiplayer, and I doubt they'd be willing to pay to play online the few times they actually want to give it a try.  And Live's services aren't near as robust in Japan as they are in the US, despite having a similar fee.

No one can deny that a huuuge (but not the only) reason is, that PS3 and Wii actually are made (read: invented) in japan.. and i am pretty confident that this is the same reason why 360 is going so well in the US.

EMEAA ftw. they are well balanced in terms of sales. :P

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

The people saying that the 360 has no exclusive software to appeal to the Japanese... do your research, and do it deeply. The 360 gets a huge load of exclusives in Japan, mostly SHMUPS, dating sims, and fighters (latest notable upcoming fighter would be... Phantom Breaker I think). The 360 is EASILY the definitive otaku/hardcore console among the three... and that is the reason that this argument is incorrect. It has the best selection for the hardcore gamer, but if we're talking mass appeal and mass sales, people would rather take the PS3/Wii over it... the reason being extreme and strong-forged brand strength and appeal... Microsoft failed to establish that with the original Xbox, and screwed it up further with the whole RROD deal, it's hard to dig it up now, even with good hardware and Kinect.

IMO, a Japanese 360 is THE 360 to get. The best western titles are already there, and there's a huge array of Japanese games that you can get for it. HUGE.

Xenophobia? Don't make me laugh. Chibi and darth already disproved that.

Nothing personal, but next time, before you make another of those threads, check your facts and arguments.

The otaku crowd is tiny.  SHMUPs and ADVs can only get you so far, especially when your main competition has MGS, FF, and a plethora of niche JRPGs that cater to the same crowd.

And the primary reason the 360 is the SHMUP console of choice is because of Cave's support, which is a result of Sony not approving Cave's initial SHMUP ports due to their aspect ratio, forcing Cave to work on 360.

However, the 360 market in Japan continues to shrink, so even Cave isn't sure what to do now:

Cave
-There will be 3 titles shown at February's event
-2 XBLA titles: one original title, and one port
-The domestic 360 market is very weak. While titles are still selling, total sales have fallen across the board. Therefore, they have to think really hard about what they're going to do from now on.
-The other day a buyer said "The 360 never sells beyond the pre-order copies, won't you develop for a different console?"
-But if there's something they want to do, then they'll struggle if needed to do it
-Kinect hasn't really been a hot topic of discussion among the people at all, especially now that it's post-launch. No one's talking about it.
-They are worried about MS' new all-Kinect-focused stance
-Right now circumstances make it really difficult to release low-priced games on the 360.

I wouldn't be surprised if the SHMUP market began switching platforms over the next couple of years, especially with all the older SHMUPs being announced for PSN via PS1 Classics.

If i am being totaly honest its neither of them. japan isnt realy that xenophobic :/ just look at devices such as the iphone 4 which is currently the higgest selling android phone in japan decpite being an apple (american) product. The main reason is that the 360 is seen by many people in japan as the otaku console. For example there are way more Visual novel and datign sim games on the 360 than on the ps3 and wii combined. both VNGs and Dating sims are regared as VERY otaku in japan (atleats from my expiriance)

The iphone uses Android? Are you sure?

THIS. Starting statement/argument already got shot down pretty quick.
