MS is profiting and not bleeding money like Sony. They've been profiting for over three years now *WITH* RROD and expensive Kinect advertising costs.

Why so much negativity?

It's just that simple.

Fun stats:

E&D division profit more this Q than it did for the entire of last fiscal year, massive gains.

MS has broken the $ 1 billion profit mark with only TWO Q's. The PS division has never posted higher than $950 million in any fiscal year since it began in 1995.

Lots of variables there, but it goes to show, MS E&D business model is one that is akin to a market leader.

Yep, it is like Nintendo and Microsoft are sharing leadership in terms of how to do business (ignoring the RROD years). In a recession no less.

Yeah, well with 3 Q's gone for Nintendo they're at $600 million, with 2 gone for MS they're at $1 billion, so unless something crazy happens from Jan- March, it looks like MS  game division will make more than Nintendo.

Nintendo will be at 1 billion, and Microsft will most likely be at 1.5 billion at the end of each quarter. The problem with Nintendo right now is really outside their control and that is the Yen.

The ironic thing about that is that Sony posted a profit for the first half of the fiscal year despite being in the same boat as Nintendo in terms of the value of the yen. I think people will be surprised at the profit numbers that Sony posts in a few days.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

seece.... its about profit.

I honestly think ms will be happy wherever the 360 finishes now.

Saying that a price cut this year is a certainty and a very aggressive holiday in 2011.

Profits are good yes

The $4,966 figure is loss obviously.

I really think it should always be stated that this isn't just the xbox division, with everything else they have in  this division we have no real way to know how much the 360 has lost

Great results for microsoft though, best quarter ever

You meant profited. The majority of items in this division havd been underperfoming and massive drains, not to mention it was solely Xbox division until a  few years ago.

Yeah true, I'd be shocked if the 360 was still negative. Maybe it is investment wise, discounted cash flow etc but $ for $ it must be close or past the breakeven point easily

Which is awful IMO. PS3 has a chance to outship 360 this Q, which means Kinect hasn't been as successful as MS are touting it. The blame lies soely on them, there is something they're doing that's wrong, whether it be failing to break into new markets or w.e

U.S sales are up 1 million over 2008, so that means sales are down everywhere else WW 700k this Q. So Kinect has had little impact elsewhere than UK and U.S ... for some reason

Kinect is only partionally function outside US and UK.  It will be interesting to see what happens to demand once voice control goes live to the rest of europe.

Plus, MS blew Nintendo out of the water for profits for the quarter.  Likely at least $200 to $300 million better.

Not so much it seems.

"The entertainment and devices portion of Microsoft (EDD) which houses X360, saw revenues of $3.698b  for the quarter, with profits of $679m."

"Thus the nine-month profit of 49.557b Yen ($602.9m) indicated Nintendo profit reached 51.57b Yen ($627m) for the three months ending December 2010."

And that's with the biggest thing ever, Kinect, launching that quarter.

Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.  What is the combined user base of DS and Wii owners that were purchasing software this holiday season?  Not to mention no businesses in the same division that are losing money bringing down the numbers for EDD.

Except that EED also accounts for mobile section, so they are even. Or not, since the DS is downing because of the 3DS.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Those are some great numbers for MS but whoever suggested that WM7 is a drain in the division is, well, wrong. I'll say wrong so I don't get banned.

Didn't the source predict 7.5 million shipped? I knew it was gonna be around 6 or so.

Are you suggesting that Windows Mobile 6.x and Windows Phone 7 were profitable?

Not suggesting, I'm telling you that 7 is.

Why is everyone suddenly bringing up the fact it has other devices in the division as a means to say that's why it's more profitable LOL. I doubt any of them make any impact in terms of profit, except when things like Kin get killed off and really dent profits.

Enough of this " We don't know what makes profit" rubbish, the 360 does, and the other devices, IF they make a profit, are going to be very small compared to the mammoth 360/live/kinect business. COMMON. SENSE.

Actually Window 7 most likely was a success seece, not saying people should downplay microsoft's 360. It just one small factor.

From the figures I've seen it doesn't sound like a success ... but I'll give you that, Windows 7 apart from the 360/live ect seems to be the 2nd most (possible) successful device in the division to date, everything else has been a failure lol.

Sony expects to make a profit of $867 million in profit for fiscal 2010 (This company isn't known for being conservative with numbers either). So they would be lower than Microsoft and Nintendo in the end.

In terms of profit good year for all three given their situations. Microsoft with the shortages, Nintendo and Sony with their Yen issue and new handhelds costs.

Instead of people picking stuff out of the air...

go check.. its all there, windows 7 mobile is on 2m devices... is that a success???? dunno.

Yes, also want to know how much Kin reportedly sold based on this article I had to review for University? 10,000 at original cost.
