Forums - Nintendo - Could Nintendo Channel Stuff next year?

I realize that the Nintnedo Wii is still selling very close to supply and is very constrained right now and that Nintendo is in fact a company that likes to produce close to what it sells to prevent loss but I was thinking that if Nintendo really wanted to jack Wii production up to an insane number next year that it could even if it doesn't sell out the whole year.

Basically with the way the Wii has sold I think that if Nintendo had the capability to jump to 3 million a month production that retailers would buy them up in the summer even if it was not selling out anticipating being short yet again in the Holidays and that Nintendo would not take that much of a loss or is this flawed logic...I mean it hurt the 360 a bit when they did it last year. Any thoughts? how much do you think Nintendo could sell to retailers Next year regardless of actual sales. Of course it woudl suck to see Nintendo fanboys jumping on VGChartz for not posting shipped numebrs instead of sales estimates but aside from that any thoughts

Thanks

I think we will likely see demand continue to fluctuate a bit between the major regions next year so it would seem more likely that Nintendo would try and shuffle around any extras rather than stuff them into retailers in a market that is not selling out.

If they did though, I certainly wouldn't want VGC to count it in the totals, its not a sold unit until it is in the hands of consumers.

To Each Man, Responsibility

Yeah nintendo can't even meet demand yet you really think stuffing will ever be an issue?

Stuffing is for companies that can't sell their product

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I can't see them doing it. Channel Stuffing is bad. Very bad. It hurts your relationships with your supply chain partners, and if those don't sell for a while makes it look to the investors like your product isn't selling at all.

If they produce 3 Million a month, I say they have a chance of filling the retail channel in the summer.

I think not that the OP thinks about given Retailers more than they need. Retailers don't take it, unless you force it. He means healthy supply (e.g. retail channel is as full as it wants to be).

Nintendo doesn't need to increase Wii production numbers, it needs to relocate the Wiis produced.
Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo isn't stockpiling, so why Nintendo doesn't sell 1.8million Wiis a month? easy, it is just selling out in the USA, if you go to Europe or Japan you can find Wiis on the wild.
If Nintendo could reduce the units shipped to Europe and Japan and increase the units shipped in the USA the problem would be solved.

Yeah, right now, but will that hold true until the end of the year?  We are getting reports that even in Europe stock is starting to sell out, and in Japan sales are on the uptick the past few weeks, will those consoles last until the end of the year? (Also which month did Nintendo ramp up to 1.8 million a month, august, july, september?)

Well you are mostly right. What I am really asking if anyone thinks that Nintendo will up production to the point where demand is met and starts filling the retail channels do you think retailers would except more than normal and if not Nintendo will push them in an effort to avoid a third year of holiday sell outs which would result in bad press if they are hard to find again.

double post DOH

If Nintendo has a third year of holiday sell-outs, it would probably be better than worse. It's an indicator as to how strong the product is. I don't think any product has ever been a "must have" item that nobody can find for three holiday seasons in a row. Nintendo would be making history. I don't care how much bad press they get for always being out of stock, if Nintendo is in short supply next holiday season, it all but guarantees that they will be more successful than the PS2. No matter how you spin it, "as successful as the PS2 can *not* be a bad thing.
