I feel like a prat if I don't tip, and there are paid releatively low wages here in UK, a friend of mine works as as a waiter, he makes about £25 for an 8 hour shift, and gets about 20 in tips. So it's the tips that push his pay to the minimum wage othrwise he'd get nearly a half of the minimum wage per hour, I am not sure if that's the case in Canada, but I thought it was like that worldwide.

In Canada the minimum wage sticks at least in my province. I know some waitresses and a cook (Who also gets a share of the tip) they all make 8.95$ or higher. I know a waitress who makes about 200$ a day in tips (She works at a bar and grill) really high end place. But honestly I can't see how she deserves it or any other waiter or waitress in my province. Why do they deserve to get tipped when no one else does.

Its unfair to pay a waitress or waiter below minimum wage, thats BS. I guess tipping would be justified in those cases. But definatly not in BC.

If the waiter earns minimum wage then fair enough, there are still instances when the service has been exceptionally good. For eg, if I went to pizza hut with friends and we got an apalling waiter, who does not refill the drinks when out so we have to wait for a long duration of time, or is generally being a prat and ignoring his/her customers then yeah not tipping is justified, but if the waiter actually drops by every now and then to check on the drinks then thats tipsworthy, even if that is in his job description, think of it as a bonus to them. I am not even sure they get bonuses considering they get quite hefty amount from tips.

As mentioned waitresses get paid far below minimum wage in the US so they pretty much work for the tips.

I only tip like $2 - 3 on average. I think that's plenty for someone who just brings my shit to me.

I tip 10% on food, drinks and beer but I don't tip if I pop in for a coffee only of one piece of cake.

I eat and drink cheap anyways since I have some pretty good discount offers all over town (15-60%).

As long as the service is adequate (gets your order right, somewhat friendly, refills your drink, etc.) I tip at least 10-15%. I've only not tipped because of bad service a couple times in my life.

i dont tip in australia but when i went to america we  only did a tiny bit but like 10% as we did not know how it worked but once on a bus trip to the canyon everyone was given the days info with a page on tipping. it went well the bus broke down the dvd did not work and the driver was really annoying. She also kepted on sayinhg how good a job she did trying to get more money though no one did.

They should just increase the food prices and pay the servers better instead of guilt tripping people into tipping.

I don't tip, because in Japan nobody tips. :) Nice, eh?

And if so-called "friends" of yours won't go to eat with you any more, because of that, I wouldn't even call them friends any more. If the service is good, you can/should tip, if the service was bad, why the hell should you reward that? Makes no sense.

Yah I'm not really friends with him and my other friend anymore. But we were really good friends when I stopped tipping.

I actually still tip about 10% of the time. I tip for two reasons. One the waitress pays attention to me "Theirs this one waitress at a bar I go to, she knows exactly what I like and tells me if theirs deals on it. Also I order similiar items each time so she knows my order. I tip her, I also tip the small mom and dad resteraunts, where they run the whole resteraunt I feel like tipping them because they don't make much money and if the service is good its worth tipping.

But with tax raises and all I've found myself tipping those two people less times these days too. I just can't justify giving money to someone who gets the same wage I do.

That's absolutely reasonable in my book.

TIpping is just a part of the culture in North America. B.C. is an affluent market, it's no surprise that given the social pressures people who can afford to tip do. I know some of my friends do it simply because they like to make the server feel good.

It pisses me off when we go out for drinks and order pitchers to save money, only to pay a ridiculous tip. 10%-15% is the standard, and that's fine, but 30% for a shitty bar with normal service! That only happened once,

For restaurants, I don't tip at places where you pay at the counter, but a nice sit-down meal it's required. Just do what you can afford though, I know it's tough, I worked minimum wage at the movie theatre, but as long as you're not going to 5 star restaurants it won't be a huge deal.

I don't, I live in the UK. I loath tipping here.

Infact, I go out of my way to moan at people who do tip here saying it's stupid and redundent as we only seem to tip waiters. Waiters here get paid the same as a person at the checkout till in a supermarket, yet we don't give them a tip for selling us food.

If I went to the US it would be different, I know waiters there make nothing so need tips to live so would tip. I'd wonder if other professions that traditionally get tipped make as little as them or do they make minimum wage like supermarket people?

Hmm, pie.
