TIpping is just a part of the culture in North America. B.C. is an affluent market, it's no surprise that given the social pressures people who can afford to tip do. I know some of my friends do it simply because they like to make the server feel good.
It pisses me off when we go out for drinks and order pitchers to save money, only to pay a ridiculous tip. 10%-15% is the standard, and that's fine, but 30% for a shitty bar with normal service! That only happened once,
For restaurants, I don't tip at places where you pay at the counter, but a nice sit-down meal it's required. Just do what you can afford though, I know it's tough, I worked minimum wage at the movie theatre, but as long as you're not going to 5 star restaurants it won't be a huge deal.
