Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Will 'Regret' $249 Pricing on 3DS, says Pachter

while yes innitial shipments i see as being sold out easily i have to disagree with this thinking

You can't just think super short term.  Imagine if say PS3 came out at $800.  I would bet it woud still have sold initial shipments. systems ALWAYS do.

But lets look not too long in the future.  PS3 is a perfect example since it had this very problem.  EVERYONE else was waiting for a price drop.  You can't deny that PS3 would have much much higher numbers now if they were $600 or whatever rediculous price they were starting at.

So its a matter of selling a few million at $300, or selling 10 million at $250 in first year.  Made up exagerated and no basis numbers there, but you get my point.

But hell lets say at $300 they sell 8,000,000 units

at $250 they sell 10,000,000 units.  Thats roughly the same revenue in the end.

BUT at $250 they have 2,000,000 more people BUYING SOFTWARE out there

They'd sell out the first year regardless of whether they priced it at $250 or $300. I don't see a problem with it being a higher price however it is Iwata's decision and Pachter was only offering an opinion. Offering an opinion isn't a crime when we have over 50 opinions in this thread already on Pachters opinion.

Tease.

When it's trying to sway investors to the systems he wants, then it is dishonest.

Yeah, but you missed the 400,000,000 in profit that you lost, assuming very little profit @ 250

No, you're not. So Pachter is really full of it to claim it should have cost more.

Hes not saying that the 3DS will fail, hes saying that Nintendo in his opinion could have made even more money at a higher launch price that is all. Given the success of the Wii and the perenial shortages for two years he does have a point.

on another note Id bet if the Wii wasnt as weak as it was hardware wise it would get all those games that the Wii only owners are crying about. The Gamecube got quite a few games that the comp got. across ALL genres

Don't get me started on the mess that was Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions, a poorly optimized PS2 game ported to the gamecube, that kills the visual style and slow framerate that jerks considerably, when they could of just ported the xbox version of the game instead.

Then he's being an fool, which is not a good idea considering his job. It's been mentioned that Nintendo needs to set a reasonable market price and not rely on cut after cut. The Wii had one cut, and it's still in the lead.
