Is Sega in a position to buy up other companies? I was under the impression they weren't doing so well as of recently.

Well, the cheap cash that was Mario and Sonic is proving to be much more than an success.

Mario and Sonic pass the hurdles, get to the finish and laugh in your ignorant face :)
My themeforest portfolio:
Sega's time in the hardware business is over.
Sega is actually about to start having some massive changes in their support. I think we are going to see a major shift in them where a lot of their console properties will be going soley to Wii and DS, and some to PS2. While they'll have a separate division for PC which'll include 360 and PS3 now.
Meaning Sonic is soon about to be a Nintendo exclusive property, and wouldn't be surprised if NIntendo wanted to invest in the brand.
a nintendo-sega merger would be nice.
for sega... not so sure about nintendo.
still, fun to think about!
the Wii is an epidemic.
Its amazing that the ps2 is still being supported by both first and 3rd party into 2008.

@BrainBox: Don't forget their Virtual Console titles. There are a lot of them and some (mostly Sonic) appear on the top selling titles. Since the Virtual Console titles are, in terms of developement costs, money for nothing, they have definately a nice pile of cash with VC.
And, don't they have other projects too, which are currently making them money? Oh, and not to mention, that Sega may have Nights sales expectations high.
Ei Kiinasti.
Eikä Japanisti.
Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.
Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
