Forums - Gaming - Valve: Buy Portal 2 on PS3, get it on Steam, linked IDs, crossplatform play

Pyro as Bill said:

I called this back at E3. Sony is signing their own death warrant.

Valve doesn't care whether you own PC/Mac/PS3 and soon Wii (2?).

It will start with Valve games and slowly other publishers will join in. Soon, if you want the best version of a 3rd party game with digital copies for each system you own, you'll have to link it to your Steam account.

Once Steam gets rolling, only one publisher will have a strong enough first party library to distinguish itself.

Nintendo Steam

v

Sony Steam

v

MS Live

Valve are gonna thrash MS and Sony at the '3rd party exclusive game' that they enjoy playing so much.

Karma, I love it.

i dont get

I'm getting LBP2 and Mass Effect 2 for $53 AU from importing.

haha and the retailers want to put GST on items bought over the internet; even so it still works out to be cheaper.

(I bought from playasia and used a $12 off coupon to reduce the price).

As a side note, I would NOT buy ps3 games from Aussie retailers as they are just overpriced in my opinion. I've also got dead space 2 on order for $48 AU...versus $89 from most Aussie shops.

someone needs to do their research in this one point. There is one retailer... and he is more the head of a retailer. Gerry Harvey from Harvey Norman, Woolworths and Westfarmers, along with EB for example are backing the hell away from his comments. The guy is one his own and if someone the PM at the time passes it (i dont think JG is dumb enough) they will be out by the next election, guaranteed.

Wow, not only are Valve supporting the PS3, but in doing so they're making buying the PC version of the game pointless (if you own a PS3). Gabe Newell would be rolling in his grave if he were dead but since that's not the case he's probably rolling in Sony's money.

PC/MAC version should be $10 cheaper. And I doubt Sony is giving him any money.

why is it that when sony gets something like this the developers just love em but when ms does its because microsoft paid them lots and lots of money. Choose one or the other, Sony obviously did pay valve, as if you really think otherwise, why the hell are you against Microsoft?

Why will sony pay valve for something that valve only needed some time to do? Valve was never against sony or with MS. Because of the "inferior" PSN, valve could manage all this, otherwise the PS3 version would be just as good as the 360 version.

What did Sony pay them for, developing the game? Valve got some new employees last year and I am guessing its because of them they managed to make Source engine 2 compatible on the PS3, and that's all valve needed.

MS on the other hand has no such advantages on their side. Most of the developers don't exactly love working with MS, with bungie gone; whereas many have actually openly stated that they like to work with Sony, David jaffe, sucker punch and insomniac(they don't belong to Sony) being some examples.

Which is why people say that MS paid dollars. Sony pays them too, for eg. they 100% paid for the AC brotherhood dlc and the mafia 2 dlc back last year. Also for the batman arkham asylum. They might have had some kind of agreement with EA for Mass effect 2.

Since MS doesn't really do anything other than timed exclusivity (which sometimes does happen because of PS3's complex-ness in programming, developers take more time to make a port), people usually think MS paid them to make timed exclusivity. Announcing 1 month exclusivity for call of duty doesn't help, and the new homefront dlc is also, another example.

Yes, everyone does pay, but they don't normally give cash, it normally ends up as paying for advertising and stuff like that, as when AC games are released, they always have PS3 branded advertising, and vice versa for CoD. I can bet we will be seeing the PS3 and Steam logos at the end of Portal 2 adverts

Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).

In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

"We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers," said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. "PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites."

I never thought I'd ever want to buy a Valve game on consoles, but goddamn

So I can buy the PS3 version to play splitscreen with my friends locally, and still use the PC version to play singleplayer and online co-op, with my save being identical between the two thanks to Steam Cloud.  Crazy.

My thoughts exactly.  I might never play it on my PS3, but hell I might as well buy it.

This is pretty awesome.

"linking their PSN and Steam accounts."

future so bright...

EXACTLY what i was thinking. If this is where the future of PSN is headed and games we could purchase on steam or PS3/PSN are interchangable it would be revolutionary.

Sadly, based on DRM and recent practices i dont see this becoming a widespread greatness.....but i guess Valve is a good company to get behind this and hopefully influence others.

Because the variables arent in a vaccuum. There is a distinct very real reason why this is only done on PSN, MSFT alone is holding these types of things back by locking up their online store.

Now, id be echoing your sentiments if there was no logistical reason why this wasnt being done on Xbox Live, but sadly there is.

Now nothing comes for free so im sure overhead was covered or aided by Sony since theyre benefiting fromt his as well......., but to imply Sony paid Valve to EXCLUDE Xbox Live in the way MSFT pays to EXCLUDE DLC from PS3 users is downright, urine inducing, milk coming out of the nose hilarous.

I'm totally buying this on PS3 now just to get a copy on both platforms... huzzah for Valve!
