Forums - General - Target taking over Zellers (Canada VS America)

Anyone who is Canadian or American will know the name Target and Zellers. Target being one of the biggest American department stores and Zellers being one of the biggest Canadian ones. For around a decade Target has been eyeing entering the Canadian market but many did not believe it could compete with both Walmart and Zellers. Analysts years ago suggested Target could not make it in Canada.

Zellers is owned by the legendary Hudson Bay Company and is known by Canadians as one of the best a biggest department stores in Canada. Many Canadians view it like they do Tim Hortons as a store proudly Canadian. Zellers has their own clothing brands and other products.

But today the news came Target is purchasing the majority of Zellers locations to replace them with Target stores. By 2014 their will be only about 50 Zellers stores left in Canada and it is expected that those may close soon after. This is a very sad day for Canadian buisness as it shows yet again that American companies can just come up here and buy out the Canadian companies.

Now I'm sure many Canadians want to see Target come to Canada, while others will mourne the loss of Zellers. As well I'm sure many Americans will be happy to see one of their favorite stores expanding into Canada and international markets.

With Zellers going down that leaves basically a single Canadian department store, its like Canada is the US now. What do you think is Target's expansion into Canada at the cost of one of Canada's biggest retailers a good thing?

Also should Target expand more globally like Walmart did? Should Target take over stores in Britian and China and Japan etc...etc... would you want Target's in your country?

Zellers is in some ways my favourite store, and in other ways one of my least favourite stores ...

The thing that I liked most about them is that many of the products they sell are inexpensive but not necessarily low quality. At the same time, I find that Zellers has such poor selection that I tend to shop at Walmart or Superstore most of the time.

Zellers is a weak brand in my eyes, it needed to go.

Zellers is owned by the hudson's bay company, which since 06 has been owned by the american company nrdc equity partners. So i dnno why ppl are making a big deal about it now.

I rarely ever step foot in zellers anymore. As far as I've known, the chain has been struggling for a long while. Just in my area, the number of zellers have gone down from 5 to 1 in the past decade. I dnno much about economics and all but I think we're probably better off with target coming in. For me personally, I think this gives me one extra store to go shopping at as zellers has been long forgotten in my mind.

EDIT: in my eyes this sale is essentially one major american corp. trading a chess piece w/ another major american corp.

Zellers sucks. I've never seen a Target store, but i pretty sure its going to be an improvement for Canadians.

As long as things are cheaper, I don't really care.

The real tragedy here is that we've lost yet another thing that starts with the letter 'Z'. It's an endangered letter and it needs conservation measures, now!

Target is pretty sweet. It's awesome to see more of them.
