I know this might be hard to do at first, but why do people who say "i dont trust reviews" or "reviewers are wrong and inconsistent in scoring" still read reviews? I have avoided every review for games I could purchase for years now. The only time I read reviews is when the controversy over a score is creating threads on popular gaming sites, vgc included. If people stop reading reviews altogether, Metacritic and review sites would have no power. It might be hard at first to judge games on your own using screenshots, videos, demos, or whatever you need to justify a decision, but it would kill reviews and their power over sales and gamers.

Ugh, I was going to leave this at a simple no but after reading the OP again, this just couldn't be more fail.

That bolded statement could possibly be one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this forum.  You can't base a game on screenshots, it's as simple as that.  If I based games purely on screenshots and video demos, I would have bought Haze, Lost: Via Domus (actually I did buy that but I knew what I was getting in to), Lair, Bomberman Zero, Saw, Saw II, FFXIV,Red Steel,  Sonic the Hedgehog, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Tron Evolution,  Fighters Uncaged, Too Human, Damnation, Naughty Bear, Terminator Salvation, X-Blades, and countless other awful games.

You've heard the expression don't judge a book from its cover right?  Why do you think that expression exists?

i didnt say just screenshots though, i said gameplay videos, etc., etc.

its fine if you think its dumb, but at least acknowledge the whole comment

If you kept reading I do acknowledge it, I just missed it the first time and it will be fixed momentarily.

And still,, even using gameplay videos is beyond stupid.  Those exist in completely controlled circumstances and don't always represent the final product.

It's fine to say something like I don't trust reviews, I trust word of mouthi I would rather rent/demo first but saying I don't trust reviews, trust demos and screenshots is just one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read.

Most people that say they don't trust reviews say that because they think the publisher bought the score.  They are free to think that but then they probably shouldn't trust things like screenshots and demos that the publishers themselves provide.

It's not that hard to think these things through.

People supposedly "don't trust" reviews because of the fact they're favorite game may have gotten a low score like a 7.8. *gasp*

They can't handle the fact people have differing opinions and say something like "they don't understand the game" or "(insert company here) paid them off!"

It's a bit annoying.

Then again, they wouldn't be like that if they didn't depend on review scores too much in the first place.

this is what i was trying to get at

a lot of people will say oh i dont trust this review, i dont trust that review, and so on

but then why dont you just trust no reviews and not read them instead of just picking the ones you agree with

I'm saying DO read reviews. They provide info. Reviews aren't evil, they're informative and 90% of the time not formed out of bias....

Just don't let your pride invalidate what they may say because of the score though...

once again, thats fine if you think its dumb

i get why you would think that, but if this is really one of the most ridiculous things youve read, than i dont really know what to say lol

its also not hard to just try a game out without acknowledging reviews, the worst you lose is a couple bucks

Wii and DS owner.

No that doesn't make sense.

I don't know if some of you have ever heard or Armond White? He's a movie critic and probably the most controversial one as his taste is simply horrible yet he's still supported by its publication (New York Press). He's been in conflict with many director or other movie critics. Most people dislike him. He's the guy who gave Toy Story 3 a rotten score on rottentomatoes, among many other things.

Jim Sterling is the Armond White of video game journalism. They both are destroying their respective media criticism.

If its a game that I want to like or a game for the sole console I support, I read the review and score to complain about how they've underrated the game and are biased.  That's what we're supposed to do, right?

I fully agree with Twestern here.

1 - As corrupt, incompetent, or irrelevant reviewers might be (hypothetically speaking here), their declared opinion will always be more reliable than that of the editor.

2 - The amount of games out there is insane. Without reviewers to somehow regulate expectations and prevent a shovelware-style crisis as that of the 80's what would we have ?

Console fabricants & editors & fans - a trinity sent from hell

i cant say anything about your first point because im not going to try to change your opinion, but as for the second point, the reviewers arent needed to regulate anything

the consumers will regulate expectations by buying the games they think are good and not buying games they are not interested in

Do you really have to guess? It says in on his sig :l

Oh. Well, no surprise there.

You know, I didn't post in your "I need help with the Wii" thread just so you can troll the Wii all the time. Seriously, Wii is a legitimate gaming platform and there is nothing wrong with owning "just" a Wii.

So why must you troll the Wii at every opportunity? If you have nothing to add to the discussion, then don't say anything.

There is nothing wrong with owning just a Wii. Don't put words in my mouth. It is just that almost every time a thread/comment like this pops up, it is made by a wii only owner.

So what? IMO many animated movies last year, like The legend of Guardians, where far superior to that hype-driven flick. I would probably rate it the same way. They dont destroy their media criticism, they only give an exterem opinion, and believe it or not, there are plenty out there whom agree with them

So LBP2 got a 7.5, who cares? You dont trust that reviewer, read another one. If something is trully a,mazing it will be reflected in the avrege score.
