Unfortunately, touch screen doesn't make for the best handheld gaming experience.

Anyway, MS is already huge in the portable gaming scene. Most laptops run Windows! Soon we'll have tablets running Windows as well.

Now all MS needs to do is start making games for Windows.

Neat. So if I play the World of Warcraft or any PC game on my laptop then am I engaging in hand-held gaming?

Yep!

Portable gaming at the least.

"At the least," what are you implying here? Are you trying to steal some bamboo from this panda to make him angry :)

Man Microsoft I hope you aren't dumb enough to seriously think Windows Phone 7 is really a gaming platform worthy of competing against 3DS and PSP2. Windows Phone 7 is nothing compared to the I-Phone and guess what most consumers don't consider the I-Phone to be in competition with DS and PSP.

I will take it seriously when all the developers start offering games and MSGameStudios themselves support it with some of their bigger franchises. Also not breaking two mill since launch makes it a very weak competitor if MS considers it a genuine handheld. 3DS is going to ship 4-mill at launch according to Nintendo, that will crush WP7 in a month.

I think we'll continue to see MS support for Nintendo's handhelds unless WP7 really picks up sales fast and actually stands a chance at competing with Nintendo or Sony.

This is how it works:

PSP2: 0 sales

3DS: 0 sales

WP7: 1.5M sales

Gap to both: 1.5M sales.

Well folks, it looks like Microsoft has taken a commanding lead in the latest generation of handhelds. I don't see how either Sony or Nintendo could compete with Microsofts 5500 titles!

It's the first to 10 million that matters, biznatch!

I love the harvest.

WP7 is great...it doesn't blow android or iOS out of the water, but it does compete and compare favorably.  I'm looking forward to the improvements and iterative changes to the phone, with the next updates this year.  The next WP and Win 8 are going to be pretty sharp, imho.

you know what? there should be a third tile on VGChartz for "Smartphone" sales, include WP7, Android and Iphone sales, because some people think its can be counted as a gaming platform , while others say its not really a phone so its like this example

Consoles

Wii Xbox PS3

Handhelds

DS PSP

SmartPhones (or Mobiles)

Iphone  Android WP7 Nokia

Well TBH there's only so much you can do gaming wise with just a simple touch screen....for me to be considered an actual gaming handheld like the DS is if it has d-pads and buttons that you can press too.

But anyways i just bought me a windows 7 phone this night and i'm lovin it!

Hella expensive bill per month but its worth it IMO.

I love my Windows Phone 7...LG Optimus 7. Its much more snappy than Blackberry bold and Nokia e71 which I had before.

Never had android or Iphone but most reviews state that it competes with those phones very well. Also, live updating tile homescreen is awesome..makes iphone and Android layout look a little messy and dated to me.

But as a mobile gaming platform? I don't know about that... Swipy Man and Impossible shoota are fun games, as is Fruit Ninja, but there are no AAA blockbusters on the phone yet for it to be considered as a gaming platform.

Ballmer is a little out of date witht hat statement... There are 5725 apps now...I have an app which tells me this :)
