Yeah right. Like that's really gonna happen with the sales lead the 3DS will already have. DQ only goes to the system with the highest installed base.
And yes, I think Nintendo has a good chance of wooing Capcom into shifting MHP4th to the 3DS. If that happens, it's really all over. Even if it doesn't happen, it's all over. Nintendo has too many guns, Sony only has Capcom to rely on.
I find it sad that a thread mostly asking what Sony can do to outperform the 3DS has been overtaken by anti-Sony people and turned into a "TEH PSP2 IS DOMZED!!1" thread. It's pretty much a given that the 3DS is going to do great off the success of the DS and its exclusives. But is it so hard to look past your bias and believe that Sony could see a similar success with the PSP2? It too has a good install base with the PSP to springboard off of. In fact, when all is said and done, the PSP may come pretty close to pulling off GBA numbers (81 mil), the first time any company has even come close to pulling off Nintendo numbers in the handheld market.
Of course, previous install bases really mean nothing if the competition can release a "better" product and/or have a better launch. Nintendo learned this when going from NES/SNES to N64/Gamecube. Sony learned it when going from the PS2 to the PS3. So really, we'll just have to wait for the launch info for the PSP2, including the price, specs, and launch software. But, there's nothing wrong with speculating.
I predict Sony can dethrone Nintendo if they do certain things. Price would have to be the major one. If they can launch the device for the same price of the 3DS, or at the most a $25 difference, that will help them greatly. I think both will be in the $249-$299 range. The launch date will help, as well. If they launch closer to Nov./Dec., they can benefit from the holiday sales rush, as well as being the new hot item on the scene. Then there's support. While I'm sure both will get great support at launch, we'll just have to wait and see how well that support continues. PSP2 will benefit greatly from having a second analog nub when it comes to FP and TP shooters, as well as camera control in action/adventure games. Having BC with the PSP and maybe some form of PS2 emulation would greatly help with its library and appeal. And if they have Android running on this thing, that will help even greater, since they would have access to Android apps/games.
if they do well then Sony is the first company to ever beat Nintendo in the handheld market lol

Sony's being smart by having Nintendo release its system first, they'll know what kind of hardware will be in it. This is important, it will make ports for them to be easier if they have a somewhat same archeticture in their system. Perhaps a second screen (too bad I really doubt this to happen), this opens up a lot for them such as extra button mapping on the lower screen (and hopefully multitouch). I'd expect it to be resistive touch not compactive. Internal storage as well as expansions for SD cards (already a given due to the PSPgo having this). Games that appeal more to the "money throwing" casual crowd that to us core gamers look like a complete waste of time (whatever to make easy money). Put "more effort" into marketing games that are near Nintendo-area core games: Jak&Daxter, Sly, and Ratchet and Clank. |
I'd bet the sorta-rumored-sorta-confirmed Sly 4 will be a PSP2 game. Might fit given that Sucker Punch already has a PS3 game for the year

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
Sony psp 2 without UMD/phycial disc games.. Feels as hot as PSP go..
Dont belivie in it. PSP did have some great games.. But Nintendo will own the handhold market. Crushi!
So yeah, PSP2 is doomed, and I'm not even being a smart ass this time around, I'm actually quiet serious. I'm not even anti-SONY or anything, I have a PS3 and 2 PSPs, I have their Bravia 3DTV and all that shit. I just think PSP2 will be fucking DoA and needs at least glassless 3D capabilities to compete, without draining too much power, which is impossible if they are going with Tegra2 and stick to a disc format, and the market has already proven that the PSPGo is DoA so pure digital distribution is pure ass too. Not to mention PSP doesn't have that many good "portable" games, I usually have it plugged in as a stationary device and go fully portable with my DS instead.

If sony plays their cards right then that have real chance of dethroning the 3ds with PSP2: 3DS has a 3.5 hour battery life- Sony should try to get at least a 5 hour battery life. 3DS will have $40-$50 games-Sony should try to maintain the price of games with the current PSP. 3DS will likely launch at $300- Sony demolished the dreamcast by announcing the PS2 for $300. If sony announces the PSP2 for $250 or lower then that could be a real game changer.
So what do you guys think? Does sony has a real chance of dethroning Nintendo? |
Its just not gonna happen.
I'm sure Nintendo could price match the PSP2 if necessary. Also, consoles are generally cheaper outside of Japan. So don't expect it to be $300 in the US.
PSP2 will likely be more powerful so getting a substantially longer battery life may not be feasible.
Playstation 2 would have destroyed the Dreamcast at any price. Probably even $600. Sega didn't exactly have a big following. PS1 sold far more units than all the Sega consoles combined.

As a remainder, 3rd Birthday was at that chart too and it didn't sale as well as expected. Using the COMG is not 100% accurate.
