Forums - PC - Amnesia hits 200k copies sold!

Let's start with what I guess people are most interested in - sales. When counting all online sales as well a the Russian retail copies, we have now sold almost 200, 000 units! This is a tremendous amount and more than we ever thought we would. Our "dream estimates" before release was something around 100k, and to be able to double that feels insane.

Note that more than half of these units have been sold at a discounted price (with as much has 75% of the price off), so the total earnings are not as much as it first sounds. Still, we are in incredible good financial situation right now. Also, the daily sales are still quite high and the average has not dropped below 200 units yet. This means that we can still pay all daily costs from these sales alone, allowing us to invest the other earnings into the future (for outsourcing, PR, etc). It also gives us a healthy buffer and allow us to manage any unexpected happenings the future might hold.

With these figures at hand, we must confess that it gives us new confidence for the PC. The sales that we have had (and are having) are more than enough to motivate developing a game with the PC as the main (and even only) platform.
Based on what we have seen, the online PC market is just getting bigger and bigger, and we are convinced we are far from the end of this growth. We think that other developers that consider making their game exclusive to a console might want to think again.

...

There is another really important thing that needs to be taken into account: If we have had a publisher and sold according to current figures, we would not be in the state that we are in now. More likely, we would now be something more like our first sales summary post. We would probably just have paid back our advance, and just recently been receiving royalties (at a much lower rate, like 25% of what we get now). This means that we would probably be looking for a new publishing deal at this point instead of having the freedom we now have. This does not mean that publishers are evil, just that one should think carefully before signing up for anything. Releasing a game without any financial backing or help with marketing is quite a struggle, but if you pull it off it is well worth the effort!

The game was only made by 5 guys, and their "dream estimates" was 100k, but they doubled it in just 4 months! I can bet that the game will now reach 500k at some point, and who knows maybe even become a million seller.

Million seller? No way. 300-400k sales LT is a good estimate. It managed to create a cult status in a short ammount of time, and I will buy it one day. But the trailers alone creep me out

wtf?! You think we're talking about a console game here?! Amnesia will keep selling for years, so it's very possible it will reach 1 million.

This is fantastic news! I can't wait for more of their games.

I agree- it will get to at least 500k. But it could sell much more than that.

The game is now at above 200k/day. That means that in a short ammount of time it will probably do 500/week, now that the GOTY hype has died down. And even if it will reach half million, how much profit do you think it will make. It will probably sell most ammount in a steam bundle, where they will make under 50 cents/game sold. Its not about the ammount they sell, its about the revenue they make.

And what do you have against console games, and their sales? Mario Kart Wii will probably have better legs then 99% of any PC game, and it will sell far above any PC game could even dream about Do you want to see real legs for games? Check out GTA: LCS for the dead PSP. That system has games that started out at 2-5k/week and became million sellers

Amnesia just came out, and it will keep selling for the next 5 years, if not more. The game will also go through several promotions on DD stores, most notably on Steam.

And Mario Kart Wii's legs are below the average good PC game so far, you know why? It's because it's a console game, and sooner or later itwill stop selling due to console iteration. Console games don't outlast their consoles, not counting things like porting old games into next generation consoles.

The average great PC game probably has an average life expectancy of 10 years or somethinglike that. Look at Bizzard games. Starcraft 1 is still selling, despite being almost 13 years old. Lucas Arts games? Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came out in 1989 and is still selling, a 22 years old game, came out on Steam not long ago.

Also, you want to shove Mario Kart Wii down my throat? You wish that any Mario game would've sold as much as World of Warcraft. Hell, I'll bet that World of Warcraft will make more profit than the entire Mario franchise.

I was one of those 200,000!

good news

I like how Indie studios are once again becoming more important in the industry

200K is amazing for a niche horror game on PC but we have to consider the fact that Amneisa onlys costs $15 on Steam and it seems those Russians got it for less than five bucks.
