Despite the imminent arrival of the 3DS, the Nintendo DS has shown no intention of quietly retiring just yet. It has emerged as the best selling console of 2010 in the UK.

MCV reports that combined sales of the Nintendo DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL beat the Xbox 360 into second place by 50,000 units. This cements its place as the most successful console in the UK since it debuted in 2004.

Despite a year-on-year decrease in sales, the records continue to tumble for the DS. Nintendo last week announced that it had shifted 47 million units in the USA, making it the most successful handheld ever in the country and second only to the PlayStation 2 overall.  

This bodes well for Nintendo as it moves forward with plans to launch the 3DS in Europe in March.

Wow... the 3DS will have a pretty nice path paved for it when it will arrive in stores :-O

Downward adjustment for DS or upward for 360 or both (or, maybe upward/downward for both but lower upward for DS or higher downward). Not by much though.

Yeah not much in it tbh, only a 90k gap adjustment, could be 45k both ways.

I wonder how DS will hold up against this year Vs 3DS!

Yeah. It would be interesting to see where they have PS3 and Wii compared to us, too, actually.

And next year ought to be quite interesting with the 3DS launching and 360's newfound momentum in UK.

2012?

Not sure if it would effect 360 sales and I'm not even sure if the overtrack is in the UK but I'm almost certain we're overtracking the DS. The amount of stock that it had in the channel at the end of last quarter (800k) was tiny relative to the volumes that it sells in. Especially considering the fact that Nintendo probably would have wanted as much stock as possible available for the price cut. Wii had almost 3 million in the channel last year when it got its price cut.

;P! Darn it! I probably won't get used to saying it's 2011 till it's 2012...
