Well, they may be able to afford a $50 one, but after their severe losses, they'll probably stay on the safe side by not cutting unless their competitors do so first.

You don't even know how much a PS3 costs at the moment. They started making money on each PS3 sold like one year ago,the components must be much cheaper now,and with the MOVE coming in,they could still make money on hardware, even with a 100$ price-cut. By then,PSN will also be profitable, and with all the software releasing this year for the PS3,I think they will be on the ''safe side'' as you say, even with a price-cut.

They claimed to profit first in June, mind you. To get a 100$ price cut, they'd need to cut down manufacturing costs by $100 in a little over a year at most. Shaving off 33% manufacturing costs in such a short time at this point is nearly impossible. Even with the software releasing, I'm sure Sony doesn't want to get into the red again, even it is just hardware.
Besides, if they try to get into a price cut war, Nintendo will devour them whole. I'm sure they don't want that.

It depends on various factors, surely it's not the case for every piece of hardware.
And at your comment regarding the price cut war.The PS3 is not really that affordable for the masses as a whole, the Wii is.
A price-cut on PS3's side would clearly have a bigger impact on sales, compared to Wii's.

Yeah, but expecting PS3 to be on the best side of the spectrum is really hopeful.
Also, contrary to popular belief, more people buy a $99 console over a $199 console than those who buy a $199 console over a $299 console.
By the way, for the moment, we're debating if PS3 can cut to $199 late this year or not when Wii could cut to $99 over a year ago (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20090407124321_Nintendo_Wii_Costs_Roughly_88_to_Manufacture__Analysts.html#).
Price can in no way be an advantage to PS3.
