You don't even know how much a PS3 costs at the moment.They started making money on each PS3 sold like one year ago,the components must be much cheaper now,and with the MOVE coming in,they could still make money on hardware,even with a 100$ price-cut.
By then,PSN will also be profitable,and with all the software releasing this year for the PS3,I think they will be on the ''safe side'' as you say,even with a price-cut.
