What I see happen from time to time is that a certain excluse will pop up in forum discussions, in order to somehow spin hype for a console of choice.  Often this hype will start before the game comes out, but then when it hits, it proves to be not as good as it was made out to be, and certainly not something of note to help the console.  On that note, I am curious what is the worst game you saw someone shilling on a videogame forum like this (or shoot in person) as a side attempt to promote a console.  I am not sure of which one, but I can think of a number:

* The Atari Jaguar was note for a sheer number of fair to poor titles.  Atari faithful back in the day on the Jaguar discussion Usenet forum, would pump up this or that game.  I would say it wasn't horrible, but NO WAY did Aliens vs Predator live up to the hype.  Also, Battlesphere was made out to be all that, but it I guess ended up ok.  Probably the worst was Fight for Life, which was hyped because it had one developer from Sega on to do it.  No way did it live up to the excitement level people made it out to be, in hopes it would make difference in the console wars.

* Count this as a "hype whatever would come out for a system in hopes to make a difference".  On Usenet, whenever as an exclusive, a XBox 360 fanboy would get all excited about it.  One message posted in keeping with this "shill a week" for the XBox 360, was for Boogie Bunnies, which read: "Boogie Bunnies are evil".  The Viva Pinata raving was a bit too much over the top to.  Why Boogie Bunnies was picked was beyond me.  I will say it isn't bad, just doesn't need to exist.  If you like it, please forgive me for sounding too down on it.

* Final Fantasy XIII, when it was a PS3 exclusive.  The game was used as ammo in fanboy wars.  I would count this as disappointment level meets the expectations when I say these.

Ok, feel free to disagree.  Would be up to see better ones as examples.

Most recently, I would say some Kinect games. I remember a few months ago, someone got into arguement with me about its game library and brought up a list of games that looked to be of low quality. Then again, most of them still have yet to release, so I may be proven wrong. All consoles have their "saviors"(even though they need no saving). For the wii, Conduit and other High Voltage Software games. For the PS3, Lair and Haze. Lastly, the 360 which had Too Human. Funny how most of us probably knew deep down that some of the games we invested our hope into were going to be crap.

Ahh, I remember "The Conduit".  I write in a post on here that it shouldn't be compared to the 360 and PS3 FPS titles, and I got fragged heavily, and I believe I even got an admin warning.  I do feel MadWorld likely was played up too much.  It is shilling for the Wii as being "mature".

As far as "Too Human" goes, I was tempted to list it, but I don't remember people shilling it that much, so I decided to pass.  Maybe I was wrong about it.

The trouble with this is hindsight is only useful in retrospect.  A game can look promising pre-release but then disappoint, maybe the people who were bigging up game X thought it would be better than sex, doesn't mean they were blind.

I remember certain individuals bigging up White Knight, Modnation Racers Metro 2033 and Alan Wake as the best game ever in terms of visuals amongst other things only to change their tone after the games were release.

reversely, I would laugh at anyone hyped for Bayonetta thinking it was going to be a horrible game but it ended up being one of my GOTYs of last year.

I saw infamous use Fat Princess in a list of why PS3 is far superior to 360 :3

Most platforms have several games that are like this, and they are usually more common early in the system's life ...

In my opinion the PS3 was the worst system for this in recent memory, because early in its life every exclusive title was supposed to immediately cause PS3 sales to skyrocket. Even when the games were decent or sold modestly well they were massive disappointments because they couldn't increase the sales of a $500/$600 system.
