Forums - Sony - What does Ps3 need?

Sony, and especially the PS3, needs its own identity, for something that the fans can latch on to. Nintendo has motion controls and several original IPs, Microsoft has Xbox Live and a few original IPs like Halo as its beacon, plus a whole new method of motion controls. Sony has some good titles, but nothing really with a "wow" factor to lure people in.

It is NOT a WHOLE new method. The core idea has been done before, but the tech itself is more advanced, cost-efficient, and at the same time, much more practical for gaming.

Not trying to downplay it, as it no doubt stands out from other products, but the method is not new.

OT: Frankly, nothing. It might have a slim chance at overtaking the 360 in overall WW sales, but other than that, there's nothing to be done (granted, it'll need a price cut for that). The brand is seriously hurt in the Americas (and the UK, but it's nowhere near as important), and the Wii is just trucking along nicely.

Next gen, they need to hit mainstream appeal with something especially in the US.

True, I meant as in released/available to the public. Its new to the consumers.

They Don't have to do anything..

When the hackers make a new firmware... the ps3 will top  360's sale in few months... And mayby even beat the wii in the end..

BUT.. i think they have to raise the price again.. Otherwise they will have a "succesfull" consol, but no profit..

I don't know why PS3 should outsell wii, but it will outsell 360 easily.

$100 PRICECUT

GTA NEXT as Exclusive

that should be enough to get it into 2nd place but the end of 2011

It needs its own identity. Let me explain:

PS2 was technically speaking, the weakest of all 3 consoles last gen, but people loved it, devs found it easy to work with, and it was very affordable. It was like the Toyota Corolla of the gaming systems - anyone who wanted one went with it - it was reliable, affordable, and had all the features anyone wanted.

Initially the PS2 was considered a massive headache to figure out for devs.

It launched at 299. Same price as most launches (give or take).

It may have been weaker, but it's only because it launched long before the other 2. It was stronger than the DC because DC was older, so same rule applies.

You seem to exist in a world that has no memory of the first two years of the console's life.

1 . The "nightmare" devs had lasted 6 months, not over a year (the PS3 was getting the same complaints). These complaints were short-lived, as there was quite a selection of games available within the first 2 years of the PS2's life.

2. Yes, $300, not $600, which is my point. And as you said in point 3, it had a massive jump start on the other consoles, and the Xbox was an unknown, and Nintendo just came off of a previous loss to the PS1. It was the best choice at the price range.

3. DC was dead out of the gate like a lame horse. It had its cult following, but all but the true fans were already done with Sega. The general trend is that after getting it's butt handed to it in a previous gen, a console has a hard time next gen recovering,. For example:

-Sega wasn't even a factor in the PS1 vs N64 days, and got decimated by the SNES before that.

-Nintendo got stomped by the PS1, and had a hard time recovering with the GameCube.

-It is expected that by this tradition, Sony will have some difficulty next generation. I believe it will be less of a factor, as the PS3 has already done some recovery in the last half of its existence.

I remember the whole "Console War" last gen, when that term first really came to use. The PS2's early hardships nowhere nearly rivaled that of the PS3's launch.

Err ya. So my problem is you calling the PS2 a toyota.

Ja those are two great ideas but I strongly disagree with your piracy comment.

No it wasn't. The Megadrive was beating the SNES until 32X and DKC came out.

Decimated is absolutely the wrong word choice.

I LOVE ICELAND!

PS3 and Move need good dance game.

The people I know that bought the 360 and Kinect (3 people)...bought it solely to play Dance Central. Plus they viewed the XBOX360 and Kinect 4GB bundle at $299 a better deal than the PS3 and Move bundle at $399. All 3 only owned the Wii up to this point.

One ''halo clone'' of bungie and  new ''call of duty game'' exclusive in U.S,sony can kick ass ..

Well, to outsell 360, it needs a lower pricepoint before irrelevance and to outsell Wii, it needs that and Nintendo IPs.

No it doesn't...PS2 didn't have them and dominated the GameCube.

Yeah, but we're talking about what PS3 needs now, right? It doesn't matter what the PS2 did then -- the competition, the brand name, the power of Nintendo IPs, the entire situation was different.

The PS3 could very well outsell the Wii if they would have the same price tag,and Sony's IPs,the multiplatform titles, are more than enough to balance the board,game-wise speaking. It doesn't need other IPs,since it has some of the best out there.

It's only a matter of price.

This post is WAY off.

Sony IP's have ZERO attention from the mainstream crowd.

Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, and other Sony exclusives are not selling at all to the mainstream gamer only to the core ones.  Price has nothing to do with it.  Sony's IP's aren't even close to as powerful as Nintendo's even if they are arguably better games.

Sony's IPs (barring Gran Turismo) have never sold to the "mainstream crowd". Just look at past sales. Only a handful of games ever passed 5M (on PS1 and PS2). But they had a TON of 2/3/4M sellers that fit the "core crowd". And it's always been that diversity of games that don't necessarily sell to the mainstream, but "there's something for everybody" that defines the Playstation brand.

The PS3 has the very same thing going for it now, in terms of software, so it's all just a matter of price now
