Forums - Microsoft - Firefox finally takes the crown as number 1

I am a google chrome user, but i am really interested about IE9 functionalities. The only downplay i found by my experience is the non-use of spelling, wish they add it in the upcoming months. In addition i tried Firefox 4 and in my opinion is a step in the right direction but remains the "heaviest" and "slowest" of the three...

I still prefer Google Chrome, but Firefox stealing the top spot is all good to me, definitely an excellent browser.

Interesting, I would have expected chrome to take more from Firefox users than IE, but I guess I was thinking wrong because Google advertise Chrome right on their homepage if you're not using it, so pretty much everyone with internet access sees it.

(former Firefox user, but I can't go back since I started with Chrome)

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I have to laugh than fanboyism even spills into which browser people use... Jesus... its all soooooooooo serious.

I couldnt give a toss which browser I use.

Sometimes Firefox crashes and it is certainly too fat these days, but its ok.... Chrome? its ok... the new IE's ? they are ok too. (IE9 is nice)

Broswers dont really excite me too much.

Yeah, its pretty ridiculous.  Its like arguing over what gas station has the best gas or something ...

Anyway, I used to use IE exclusively but some coder friends of mine kept talking Firefox this and Firefox that.  So I gave it a try and really didn't see the big deal.  I did download some plugins that made web development easier for sure, but now I know the plugin market is growing for all 3.  Also the plugins, along with whatever that last update was, started making FF a crashy, slow mess.  So now I use Chrome.  For sites that I can (which is most).  Since I'm still on XP, it runs the smoothest for me.

But, for old times sake, I do open IE8 (wish I could give 9 a try ...) and FF and they still do the job for my taste just fine.  I really don't understand why people let themselves get so worked up and fanboyish over something as trivial as a browser ...

In europe according to Statcountrer. They say its due to Chrome taking Marketshare from IE while FF maintained its postion making it number one. LINK

Its because IE doesn't come with copy of Windows 7 in Europe that these browsers are even close to IE. General public doesn't need to switch browsers from IE as it does basic browsing fine.

You're wrong. You'd be hard pressed to find a college campus, school, or office that still uses IE in the US. There's an older generation of internet-ignorant people who still use it, but overall, it's being phased out entirely among professionals and youth. The future of IE is bleak at best. Frankly it's already pretty much done. Just too insecure, and it's no longer the standard for education or major businesses.

PS: I use both Chrome and a Windows-specific mod of Firefox called "Pale Moon."

Sorry but how does that make him wrong about why it has changed in Europe... he is right.  The anti-competitve rule which made MS unbunbdle IE is of course the reason why it has changed so much recently....

Ironically it is what has made Google get such a hold.  Google gaining advantage from an anti monopoly action... hilarious.

Clearly I was addressing his second statement, that the general public doesn't need to switch from IE, because it does basic browsing just fine, when clearly the general public is switching from IE. Also surely you, as a Microsoft fan, aren't begrudging another company their monopoly...

I despise IE and use FF but IE still has a 57% market share and more than double Firefox's which is second, I don't see how it's in danger of being phased out at all.

The simple answer to that is 4 years ago IE had an 85% marketshare, and the loss of marketshare for IE is increasing exponentially. So following the current rate of decline, within another 4 years it should be the 3rd largest browser in the world, behind both Chrome and Firefox.

Well deserved if true! I've used Firefox for alost five years now and I'll most likely continue doing that.

Four years for me. Go Firefox!

I remember when it had a 3% marketshare and Netscape had 90% of the market.  I'm not going to count MS out just yet.

I don't think that brand really mattered in that. If anything that's an example of how new and better products can rise up to become standard over older and outdated ones.
