The UK video games and interactive entertainment industry generated £2.875 billion in revenue during 2010, down from £3.311 billion a year earlier, according to data released today by UKIE.
Xbox 360 and PS3 brought in the most cash from hardware and software sales, with Microsoft's console edging Sony's for the No.1 spot. Oddly, UKIE's figures don't mention specific data for Nintendo.
Total sales of console games came in at £1.45 billion, with Xbox 360 and PS3 showing growth over 2009. Xbox 360 games generated £538 million and PS3 titles £414 million. In terms of units sold, 18.2 million Xbox 360 games were snapped up, versus 13.8 million PS3 titles.
The total revenue for console hardware sales amounted to £800 million, headed by Xbox 360 with £232 million and followed by PS3 with £229 million. Combined hardware sales of the two platforms totalled 2.3 million units.
During 2010, 63 million console and PC games were sold domestically, which works out at more than one per person in the UK. Call of Duty: Black Ops became the UK's fastest - and best selling game - in history.
Meanwhile, gaming peripherals generated £545m in 2010, with total sales hitting 25.8 million units.
UKIE director general Mike Rawlinson said: "Despite 2010 being a tough year for the economy, the video games and interactive entertainment industry continues to perform strongly.
"As the UK's leading creative industry, these figures demonstrate the increasingly popular position of video games in everyone's everyday lives, and the strength that the sector has to see it through tough times."
