Here's a question someone asked on gamefaqs: Now that the ps3 systems are hacked, how safe is your ps3 from Malware and crap like that?

I assume it's safe unless you go around downloading homebrew apps (and that's true for any homebrew app).

Awesome, I look forward to the zomg, my ps3 has been hacked threads.

Come on, you can't be this naive...

Oh? In what way?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Easy, how many threads have you seen like that for Wii, 360, DS and PSP, not to mention Gamecube, PS2, PS1, etc...?

Oh yeah, that's right... none.

Of course however installing custom firmware has the risk of bricking your console, but so does installing official updates.

jeez...I guess it's all down to the few honest gamers who choose to maintain the authenticity of their machines.

Here's an idea: come down off your high horse and use your head for a second.

I paid good money for my PS3, and one of the reasons I did so was because of its ability to run Linux. This was an advertised feature.

But Sony decided to take that ability away from me, even though I am not a pirate.

I am definitely reinstalling Linux on my PS3. I am regaining functionality that I paid for, and Sony can eat shit if they have a problem with it.

Linux was not advertized, that is why the lawsuits about Linux failed miserably. Get your facts right.

I'm not talking about bricking, I'm thinking like viruses and pshing (sp) and stuff like that.

Advertised or not, it was still a promised feature. Legally, I have no idea if it matters at all, but to tell the truth, I don't care at all.

I want to get an honest response here.

Who loves their PSP?

If so, why did Sony add an internet browser?

If so, why did Sony add RS feeds?

If so, why did Sony add internet radio?

If so, why did Sony add new video formats? (Originally only had some bullshit .mpv or something where files were in 2 parts)

If so, why did Sony add custom themes?

If so, why did Sony add WMA and Flash after initially adding the browser?

I'll tell you why. To combat custom firmware. If not for custom firmware who knows if PSP would still be around and if so, if it would have all the features it has today.

So stop hating on things you know very little about. I am convinced that the VGC community knows very little about the benefits of the homebrew community. A community that is doing nothing wrong seeing as how after  paying $300-600 for a PS3 they should be free to do whatever the hell they please with the console they purchased.

Yes piracy is a negative to opening up a console, but stop focusing on only the negative and for once look at how many positives it brings.

For example, ask the XBox community what they thought about XBMC for all those years.

Atleast if official updates brick the console, it will still be covered under their warranty. I should know, I had it happen to me and I received a replacement free of charge.

Regardless how tempting it may be to have custom firmware etc, I will not due that to my PS3 as I have to much respect for Sony, and i'm really against it anyways. There's a reason I don't download music and just use youtube as my source for music.

Proud owner of the PSone original, PSone slim, PS2 slim, PS3 slim, PSP-3000.

37 PS3 games and counting.

What viruses?

I have been a part of the homebrew scene for almost 10 years now and I have heard that bogus excuse the entire time, yet it has failed to rear it's ugly face.
