I was comparing GT5's sales to the PS3's other big hits just now and I found it pretty interesting. So I thought I'd make a thread to keep track of how GT5 is performing in relation to these titles to give us an idea of where it'll end up when all is said and done. I'm using MW2 instead of Black Ops because its lifetime sales will probably be closer to where GT5 finishes.
When the charts for the Americas and Japan go up GT5 should be sitting at around 4.6 million after 5 weeks on sale. I was surprised to see how well this compared to these games which broke sales records for the console earlier in the generation.
GTAIV @ 5 weeks: 3.9 million (LTD 7 million)
GT5 @ 5 weeks: 4.6 million
MW2 @ 5 weeks: 5 million (LTD 9 million)
Things to consider:
-GTAIV launched in April and MW2 earlier in November. In weeks 6-8, MW2 will extend its lead over GT5 while GTAIV falls further behind both of them.
-Black Ops has cut off MW2 legs a year into its shelf life. GT5 will be without competition for at least another 2 years. It will also benefit from a Platinum/Greatest Hits release and bundling in the future. GT5 will eventually begin to close the gap.
-Neither GTAIV or MW2 have managed to double their first 5 weeks yet, but it is possible down the road. If GT5 follows suit it'll clear 9 million.
I think at the very least we're looking at 8 million for Gran Turismo 5. I'm certain it will be able to top GTA but CoD will be difficult to catch. I'll revisit this thread at the ten week mark to see how things are progressing.
