GT5 vs. Modern Warfare 2 and GTAIV

MW2 > GT5 > GTAIV 23 21.70%

I was comparing GT5's sales to the PS3's other big hits just now and I found it pretty interesting. So I thought I'd make a thread to keep track of how GT5 is performing in relation to these titles to give us an idea of where it'll end up when all is said and done. I'm using MW2 instead of Black Ops because its lifetime sales will probably be closer to where GT5 finishes.

When the charts for the Americas and Japan go up GT5 should be sitting at around 4.6 million after 5 weeks on sale. I was surprised to see how well this compared to these games which broke sales records for the console earlier in the generation.

GTAIV @ 5 weeks: 3.9 million (LTD 7 million)
GT5 @ 5 weeks: 4.6 million
MW2 @ 5 weeks: 5 million (LTD 9 million)

Things to consider:
-GTAIV launched in April and MW2 earlier in November. In weeks 6-8, MW2 will extend its lead over GT5 while GTAIV falls further behind both of them.
-Black Ops has cut off MW2 legs a year into its shelf life. GT5 will be without competition for at least another 2 years. It will also benefit from a Platinum/Greatest Hits release and bundling in the future. GT5 will eventually begin to close the gap.
-Neither GTAIV or MW2 have managed to double their first 5 weeks yet, but it is possible down the road. If GT5 follows suit it'll clear 9 million.

I think at the very least we're looking at 8 million for Gran Turismo 5. I'm certain it will be able to top GTA but CoD will be difficult to catch. I'll revisit this thread at the ten week mark to see how things are progressing.

I think GT5 will end on top of those 2,mainly because MW2 has pretty much stopped selling(undertracked, maybe?),it needs a shitload of luck to hit 10M,and IMO GT5 will pass that.

GT5 vs. Black Ops,well that's a more interesting debate.

Need more time as you said at the end imo, 10 weeks at least, GT5 is riding the holiday wave that those two didn't in the initial launch frame. I think MW2 was just entering the holiday boost, and if you include ten weeks MW2-GT5 comparison would be more fair, I don't think that GT5-GTA4 is a fair comparison though, unless comparing over a year, as GTA4 didn't have the similar sales boost. When all is said and done I reckon it'll be MW2 > GT5 > GTA4, don't hold me to that though, as it could swing either way x)

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I don't think that GT5 will outsell MW2. True Black Ops took some wind from its sails however it has a good head start and I'm not sure GT5 legs' will be so loooong, especially after Christmas. It also did 'badly' in Japan, and there is generally no space for catch up there.

I think gt5 will outsell gta but probably not mw2.

I agree. GT5 would need to average almost 80k/week between now and this time 2011 to match MW2's first year. :/

And MW2 was doing 80k weekly at least until July/August if I recall correctly.

unless heavily bundled I don't think GT5 will pass MW2. MW2 should reach 10mil or at least get very close by the end of next holidays. Unless its heavily bundled I don't think GT5 will get over 8-9mil considering its on par with GT4 despite having the most frontloaded possible release date having five full weeks of maximum holiday boost. But then again it will be easier to make a prediction once we see how GT5 sales are a few months after the holidays end.

Bundles will push it past MW2

Look again. COD games keep selling after other ones come put. MW2 will surely get to 10m.

GT5 will cap off at around 9m
