Elderly woman foils robbery with water
By Hank Daniszewski, QMI Agency

LONDON, Ont. — An 88-year-old Ingersoll, Ont., woman threw some cold water on a plan to rob her home.

Provincial police in the southern Ontario town said a man knocked on the woman's door at around noon on Tuesday.

Police said the woman knew the man and he had been in the house before.

As they talked, the man asked the woman for a glass of water. He drank half of the water, returned the glass and then pulled out a gun, police said.

The woman immediately threw the rest of the water in his face and the man fled.

Although the woman prevented the robbery, Const. Dennis Harwood said police strongly recommend people offer no resistance when faced with an armed robber.

"You never know what they are going to do . . . In this case, I think it was more of a reflex action on the part of the woman," said Harwood.

Cops searched the area with dogs and arrested a 21-year-old man about four hours later.

The man, who lives in Ingersoll, was carrying a pellet pistol, police said.

He is charged with robbery, pointing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon and theft.

Harwood said the theft charge relates to an earlier case where the man had been in the woman's home and some cash was stolen.

The suspect is being held for a bail hearing.

It pisses me off that police recommend people not fight back. You don't fight back, you're still just as likely to risk harm. They can tie you up and then it's easier for them to have their way with you.

You fight back and you still risk harm but at least you send the message that you're not taking any shit thrown at you.

Remember 911? They didn't resist and it was too late and the consequences was tantamount.

There's no sense in provoking an armed individual.  If this is the sort of person who would kill you dead after you've already surrendered then odds are they probably won't lose any sleep over delusions of self defense.  However, if the individual is such a person who would accept compliance and an honourable surrender, attacking said person might force them to reconsider using the weapon in hand.  The reason why it is recommended to offer no resistance is because that course of action has been statistically shown to dramatically reduce the chances of things getting worse.  It sucks, but that's how it is.

In that situation, might as well not fight it.

These stories where people fought back and lived make good headlines, don't they?  The stories where somebody got murdered for offering resistance kinda get ignored.

Don't fight back.  You're reacting to somebody who has already planned the scenario out, already has you at a disadvantage, and already has a weapon trained on you.  The best thing you can do is be the best damn witness you can be.  Look for tatoos, scars, accents,or whatever you can to help police catch the offender.  Otherwise, the only message you may be sending is the insciption on your tombstone:  "He died trying to save his iPod."

edit:  I just re-read the OP.  "Remember 911"?  WTF!?

Well as long as the criminal doesn't show any intent to kill you. Then you might as well not resist.  It's really hard to know, I've never been in a situation where my life was put into danger, but what the police suggested was pretty basic and I've heard a lot of people who got killed after fighting back. It's probably a proven statistics that even the authority recommends not to resist unless and until you find a right opening where the probability of surviving is very high... After all Life is much more important than material possessions...

If  someone was going to shoot me then i would fight back because i could overcome the armed assailent.

Some people have toy guns that they try to pass off as real weapons to try to scare people.

This looks like a real gun but it is actually a lighter.

This gun looks like a toy but it is real.

You should always if a gun is pointed at you, treat it as if it were real.

But if he/she was not going to shoot me then i would give them what they want  and when they leave, call the police.

How do you know if they won't shoot you afterward? You don't.

i was attacked by a guy this year who wanted to steal my car while i was filling it up.

i refused to give him the key and we wresteled a bit for it (he didn't have a weapon and seemed to be on drugs) when i finally fell down i called for help, and ppl came out and helped me.

he eventually ran away. later he pulled someoune out of his car and drove off, trying to get to the netherlands. the police caught him in germany.

it could have been my car he stole and drove off. i also laerned later that i was already the second one who's car he wanted to get.

in my case it was for the better i resisted.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
