Forums - Nintendo - Skype for DSi - Why isn't it made already?

I owned a DSL before and this never crossed my mind.

Now that I got a DSiXL to replace my broken DSL, I think DSi is made for skype.

You got cameras, microphone and wifi. The ingredients neccessary for skype video phone.

A quick google showed that Skype was interested in developing for it bue Nintendo shot it down back in '09.

Why, Nintendo, why?

You can video chat on Pokemon Black and White. That's kinda like Skype right?

Seriously? Day 1.

I actually wondered the same thing.

I really hope skype will be on the 3DS. *crosses fingers*

You get to draw on people's faces, too? That's awesome.

PSP has Skype... well sort of.

Yeah, but most people you want to call won't have Pokémon B&W, and even if they do they may only have a DS Lite or Phat. It also costs a lot more money than Skype, which would at most cost a few quid on DSi.

The lack of DSi Skype is absurd at this point, it was made for it. It would be much better and than getting a laptop or a netbook/tablet for my grandparents for example if it was available.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

So, I'll just have to buy a DSi Pokemon B/W for all my friends. Problem solved.

Nintendo will go to lengths to retain the family-friendly image of their product, even when it reduces functionality. Skype could negatively effect their brand, so Nintendo chose to reject it. The rediculous rules surrounding WiiSpeak implementation is another example of Nintendo's hand-holding attitude with online interaction at the expense of functionality.
