Forums - Gaming - Besides being fun, what's expected from games?

Hydroventure

is the most fun i've had with a game since the first super mario galaxy was released, it just makes me smile. I've bought a crapload of games since then. Most have been awesome, intresting and just overall cool. but fun? no i can't say that they've been.

To me fun is enough.

Fun. That's all I expect.

I would be looking at the medium of games here.  There are a lot of other mediums for expression, but my focus is games as a medium.  I know "immersion" has been said, and I wanted to ask about that.  Assume that the Star Trek: Next Generation Holodeck appears.  Would what you do in that environment be considered a "game" (not saying you couldn't play a game in it, but wondering about the experience itself)?  I would say it is a form of play, but are all forms of play "games"?

What I, personally, expect from games is no more or less than I expect from any other kind of cultural item. Games are, after all, social, cultural, intellectual and artistic constructs no different from any other form of human expression. Games can - and do, in fact - facilitate communication of all kinds of ideas, just as every other medium.

What I don't expect from games, is "fun". I'm not the first one to say it, but it truly is a useless, vapid excuse of a term. What does it actually designate? Nothing and everything. It's entirely subjective - and, I think, far too narrow to cover the wealth of possible game experieces - and that makes it useless as a critical tool. It's actually the basis of this entire thread, because playing for "fun" is considered to be a frivolous and puerile activity.

What I want from a game is simply a lusory experience. What kind of experience that is, is entirely dependent upon the game.

Fun can be defined as entertaining and having an enjoyable time.  Something that does that can do other things to, but the question would be as to what one would expect beyond this.  So, would you agree that a game should at least be entertaining and provide an enjoyable time?

Fun is fine but sometimes i need a story to keep me playing. I mean its good if a game is just fun, but i would rather just play a game that has story and is fun lol. It just pushes me to play the game and finish it, oh and trophies.

I did say I wanted a lusory experience - that is to say, I expect to want to keep playing. So, yes. However, I don't approve of the idea of a game as mere frivolous fun. I know a lot of games that are everything except that kind of fun, yet they are entirely captivating. A famous example: http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/. Simply put, if it is fun, it is fun of an unconventional sort.

As for games being play, I see games as a kind of structured play. Games can be more or less like free play, but the important difference is that game players accept the (designer of the) rules as an authority, and play is structured and given meaning by that. If a player doesn't follow the explicit/implicit rules/spirit of a game, then his play isn't actually part of the game at all (this would be the case with the Holodeck).

After fun/replay value, I look for control, smoothness of graphics, music, atmosphere, difficulty, and features.

@rolstoppable you need others to tell you if a game is good or not??? interesting. personally I think that we should be mature by now to know if a game is good or not. There are some games that are considered bad that I enjoy, (fighting force) but there are games that are well made and "good" that i woldnt touch with a five foot pole. (bayonnetta, NSMBWii, WOW, etc.)

It's different for each genre and game.

Some standards for all games

Fun (entertaining), good/tight controls, and gameplay something that just plays well.

By genre:

Racing SIM:

Car handling, content, realistic cars/tracks, and customization (which embodies GT5 so not making much sense why the scores are what they are)

Kart/arcade racer:

Good track design, unique mechanics, many pluses or minuses to various ways to race IE short cuts, items, etc

Platformers:

Graphics, a big push on controls and camera, and level design/mechanics

RPGs:

Story story story story story, presentation, STORY, battle system, STORY!!, content, and last but not least F$%#ING STORY!!!!!

FPS:

Level design (at least in the past), mechanics, online multiplayer, and replay value since typically they're short.

Action Adventure:

Story, mechanics, graphics, content, and puzzles (probably one of peoples favorites but hardest genre to really cover all bases of what people want)

Might think up some more later or people can add to this as they see fit
