Forums - PC - What happened to Crysis and UT3 sales?

According to NPD Crysis has sold 86,633 copies in November while UT3 sold just 33,995.  I can sort of understand Crysis' low sales because of its steep hardware requirements but UT3 didn't really have that problem and also had the advantage of a decent fan base.  It will be interesting to see if this affects the creation of cutting edge games on PC and if it leads to even more PC games becoming cross-platform.

I can answer ths one. As a UT player myself. My old UT clan was pretty pissed at Epic for pissing all over them. Yes, UT was still technically a PC game, but Epic has clearly been pushing more towards consoles and the press  received for the PS3 version (Will it make it by Christmas? This is the PS3's Halo competition!) made most of us feel like Epic no longer suited our needs.

Virtually all of us went back to WoW or joined up in TF2. I haven't played UT III in over a month already.

I actually bought UT3 for the PC but I still haven't had time to touch it. >_>

Being a huge fan of the original Unreal Tournament on the PC I can say that a lot of people were very disapointed with UT2003 and had no real intention of buying UT3 without it receiving amazing reviews ... Being that its reviews are good but not amazing (85%) it falls pretty low on my list of games that I have to play.

A lot of PC game sales are online now which can't be tracked as easily so they are missing a lot in there.

what clan are you in.. I might consider joining. lol

But actually I understand what Epic is going because right now consoles are taking over the gaming market. PC gaming is in a decline no matter how I want to deny it.

Gabe Newell recently did an interview where he pointed out that PC software sales were actually on the rise over the last few years. The change though is that much of those sales have been through steam and other digital distribution sources. Of course, Valve would never sell UT3 on Steam, but a lot of current sales are digital distribution on PC. Unlike consoles, digital distribution can actually make up the majority of the sales of individual games on PC. Especially for Valve's games.

Valve is the only comapny being widely successful in the PC gaming realm right now though. Thats becasue half-life is god-like and steam is damn good. Other companies arent selling well. Even John Carmack who hates the PS3 with a passion is porting Quake Wars to the 360 and PS3.

Yeah, I don't plan on getting Crysis or UT3 anytime soon.

Crysis sounds good, and it looks good, but my system can't play it well yet. And UT3...eh. I've played plenty of Unreal to last me for a few more years...there's nothing that special about UT3 to me.

And yeah, they didn't really push UT3 for PC in ads...why show PS3 gameplay videos, but not PC, when PC is generally considered the best version anyway?

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

My theory is market saturation/competition. We don't need ten million shooters! Can we get back to making great action/adventure games and rpgs and especially racing games? [/rant]

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
