If Sony want to go the phone only route (which I seriously doubt they will - despite all the rumours) then they better be ready to release a new iteration every year or so... as Apple do, with fully functional backward compatibility. This doesn't seem to resemble the Playstation business model at all to me.

Where have you been? In the past four years, we've gotten 4 new PSP models...

Cutting a very long story short, the core technology is used in millions of devices worldwide. Noteably HTC , the largest Microsoft Windows phone maker uses the core technology as a games platform. The business model is to make the underlying technology fully transparent and seamless for the end user, so rebranding or non-branding usage of the technology was allowed. You use this technology without you ever knowing you are using this technology.
It was not my intention to move towards this discussion, but if people are interested I can sequence the turn of events. But the tech I was discussing back then is a "major cell phone platform" today. AmigaOS is a different project, the AmigaDE/intent regards a technology which allows content to be seamlessly run on different hardware platforms with good speed.

I think I now know why I can't find the more indepth postings I was originally looking for. I wrote quite a few messages on the OSNews forums, it appears the modern staff removed these forums from the website.

A CES 2011 preview:

It talks about the next big thing regarding upcoming cellphones, the guy highlights uses such as videochat and payments as the most interesting. Stuff I speculated on a decade ago.
Reading this thread was actually quite amusing.
Anyway. I need a new phone, thinking about getting one this year. What would you advise for me Mike? I'm in the UK... And have no price limit!

@ Carl
Depends on your needs and desires. For example my wife especially loves using facebook, her iPhone is great for such things. I have a Nokia car kit installed in my BMW, I especially need my phone to be compatible with this for hands-free phone answering while on the road (I drive more than 2 hours a day). IMO read some reviews, look at the features of interest to you and ask to test the phone you think you may like.
