Against the grain: Let's all have a HD Wii!

Yes, I'd buy a HD Wii 32 26.67%

No, my Wii is fine in SD 36 30.00%

No, but I'll only yet Wii2 if it's HD 29 24.17%

No, and I'll never get one, it's a toy 14 11.67%

Yes, but only if it was a... 9 7.50%

Total:120

I agree with a few others here - Just an HD upgrade for the existing Wii doesnt interest me. Here's what I'd like out of the next Nintendo home console -

HD at 1080p (obviously)

Motion Controls (given)

a big CPU and memory leap for big memory-hog games from major devs

Wireless N AND Gigabit ethernet port

Dolby Digital 5.1 (at minimum- please stop with Pro logic 2 already!)

... its not a big list, nor impossible, but its what I want out of my next Nintendo home console.

I would probably buy a new wii if they add a good quality scaler, hdmi, ethernet port and just ebay the old one.

Lets see if I can think of some good reasons:

  • Simplify the connectors, just one HDMI plug vs 3 composite which can be plugged in wrong.
  • Games look better when they are scaled to the LCDs native resolution.
  • Increases the longevity of the Wii if they intend to keep it on the market.
  • Increasing the internal memory and storage increases the internet and media streaming options.
  • They could start building a better online network with applications and games from 3rd parties.
  • Hows that for 5 decent reasons for a Wii HD?

I'd add a sixth, at least from Nintendo's perspective...

    • Remove GCN controller/memory card ports and specialized mutli-size DVD slot for GCN backwards compatibility in order to shave manufacturing costs.

Thats a pretty good reason in itself. The BOM savings over 30M or more units could more than pay back the development costs of the revision.

And there was a rumour about a year ago Nintendo was working on a convection cooled Wii (no fan) that's more savings (albeit small ones) as well as an impressive technical achievement if they can do it and not have Wii's overheating.

I mean what was the last major console without a fan? I would guess the dreamcast had one, which means the last was the N64.

Against the Grain hmmm...this looks so familiar.

We can't have one. Patcher has all Wii HD's.

I don't need HD for my Wii as I still use a normal old SD TV. My 2 (soon 3) year old son loves to poke the screen with his fingers, so I won't get an HD flatscreen TV until this "phase" is over.

I'm pretty sure the next generation Nintendo console will be HD, though. Maybe until then I'll have a nice HD TV to go with it.

Well they could use a vapour chamber. They use those on high end and passively cooled graphics cards. Effectively it is like a flat, wide heat pipe which is great for heat disipation with copper fins attached.

As for fans, probably the N64, yeah.

    Tease.

    Now THAT'S a good idea!

As for your comments about a HD wii, whilst reasonable and logical (most logical I've seen even!) I don't think that the Wii is suffereing enough at the moment for Nintendo to consider it. If it sells 15mil next year, then there will be NO HD Wii. Of that I'm certain
