Lets see if I can think of some good reasons:

  • Simplify the connectors, just one HDMI plug vs 3 composite which can be plugged in wrong.
  • Games look better when they are scaled to the LCDs native resolution.
  • Increases the longevity of the Wii if they intend to keep it on the market.
  • Increasing the internal memory and storage increases the internet and media streaming options.
  • They could start building a better online network with applications and games from 3rd parties.
  • Hows that for 5 decent reasons for a Wii HD?

I'd add a sixth, at least from Nintendo's perspective...

    • Remove GCN controller/memory card ports and specialized mutli-size DVD slot for GCN backwards compatibility in order to shave manufacturing costs.

Thats a pretty good reason in itself. The BOM savings over 30M or more units could more than pay back the development costs of the revision.

And there was a rumour about a year ago Nintendo was working on a convection cooled Wii (no fan) that's more savings (albeit small ones) as well as an impressive technical achievement if they can do it and not have Wii's overheating.

I mean what was the last major console without a fan? I would guess the dreamcast had one, which means the last was the N64.
