Personally I never used to care, until GameCube came along. Sales increase the amount of money a publisher has and that amount of money effects whether those developers survive or die. The sales of specific games can lead to the demise of a franchise, developer and even publisher.
I think when Acclaim Games went under it really was a reality check for me. I love Turok and some of the older SNES/NES/N64 Acclaim games. Other developers began biting the dust during the GameCube era as well, even if the developer made 5 great games all it took was a single big loss and bamb they were gone for good.
So now when I value an IP I watch the sales of that IP very closely. if the IP under performs chances are the publisher won't use it again. I also watch the games coming from my favorite developers, because one flop could be the end.
Lastly I really watch Nintendo's hardware numbers closely because they are my favorite hardware manufacturer. The more success they have the more games they can produce the more games they produce the more great games I have to play.
More recently dozens of studio's have been closed alongside a handful of publishers. I value the industry and as such I want to see it do well and am interested in the direction it is going in. Thus I love to read the latest numbers!

Almost word to word what I was gonna say.
I occasionally check out the weekly sales, but I don't throw a fucking tantrum over them, unlike some other people I could name.
Whenever my favorite system sells well, angels come from the sky and give me chocolate.
Thank god I'm a DS fan.
i don't really care, infact i've been on kotaku more nowadays since no one seems to hilariously fight about stupid stuff like the stuff i've seen people fight around here...
