Forums - Nintendo - Some 3DS specs (cards maximun size)

Not only has it caught up to optical media in capacity, it has surpassed it. The largest publicly available optical medium is a double layered Blu-ray disc at 50 GB. The largest SDXC card is 64 GB. This was unthinkable back in the N64 days.

Anyone wondering if Nintendo is considering that for their next system?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Weak, the psp2 will have 2x that space!

And manditory installs?

PSP2, it only does everything :)

I predict a later literation of psp2 to feature 3D

hey danny, I love ur sig! I don't doubt PSP2 will have more space. It will have higher graphics than 3DS and probably overall better specs. but it will probably sell less compared to the 3DS than the PSP did compared to the DS. Unless they have some suprise up their sleeve besides it being a phone.

OT, I love the fact that the 3DS is at least as powerful as the wii. Where's my Budokai Tenkaichi Tag Team???

Nice, I think 8GB would be plenty space to last the 3DS for it's lifetime.
I'm surprised with some of the PSP games with being able to squeeze to only 1.8 GB.

Probably still going to be to expensive at that level.  Maybe 16 GB's   The economies of scale will help reduce costs but I'm just not sure if it will be enough to go all the way to 64 GB's.

We were discussing the differences in optical and flash mediums since the N64/PS days.  Back then, optical media was far cheaper and much higher capacity than flash but today you can buy a single flash memory module chip with a greater capacity than the highest capacity optical media disc.  But the price difference is still far in favor of optical mediums.

the quesation was raised earlier as to why carts crippled the 64, but haven't harmed the ds.

10 years ago an 8-64 MB rom cartridge cost several times that of a 650MB CD, so a fraction of the space at several times the cost

basically solid state tech now has greater storage capacity than the highest end consumer optical media and the costs have become very affordable

I'd personally love for Nintendo to go back to solid state, but it's not happening next gen.  They'll have Panasonic deliver a customized Blu-ray solution, with Wii DVD backward compatibility, and still no movie playback. ;)

Nah.

2.5 times the power of 360/PS3.

Solid state game format.

20GB internal storage.

No backwards compatibility.

No moving parts.

$150 US launch price.
