Not really; I've got both a Wii, PS3 and 360 and use the Wii far more for 2proper" gaming than those two this year...

Mainly due to Monster Hunter though

But you have a PS3 and 360...  I used my Wii far more than the 360 (now gone) but still ended up getting a 360 for WRPGs and other genre's that Wii sadly lacks.   So now even an exclusive 'core' game like Monster Hunter has to compete with all the titles on the HD systems for our dollars.    There's little point in putting those games exclusive to Wii now.

I think you should've built/bought a gaming PC if you want WRPG's and other genres.

Most Wii gamers here and IRL that I know use a PC-Wii combination.

The line between WRPG and MMORPG is very hazy nowadays, hence why PC is KING OF THEM ALL!

This man speaks the truth.

Did you expect anything different?

I should add that the vulume of m rated games on the other systems increase sales, but the costs are so high that only a few make money, and that only a few really sell that well anyway.

I wonder how big the development budget for The Last Story and Xenoblade are.

Hard to say, since budget disclosure is so rare among the gaming industry.

It is, but I'd guess

Xenoblade-£9 million

The Last Story- £12 million

(Typical Wii game- £7 million)

(Typical HD game- £16-20 million)

These are all just guesses, but likely in the right area

Your guess is somewhat over estimated on all front i would i have to say. I dont know the exact figures myself but consider crysis cost 20 million to make i highly doubt thats the general amoutn spent. It probably more around 5 million for a trypicle wii game and 10 million for hd game. With very high buget wii games being about 15 million and very high budget HD games being about 50 million.

To be honest though the obveous reaosn ti costs more is that the budget is mostly spent og the graphicle sid eof things which the wii is slightly lacking in.

Perhaps; however, the only two figures I know FOR SURE are:

GTAIV-£47 million

FF13- £60 million

(I also remember reading that COD games on the  HD consoles cost more than 5X as much as on the Wii)

*starts looking for source*

gta 4 actualy cost an estimated 100 million :P ff13 was about 60 or 70 million yes. Obveously it costs alot more to make cod for HD consols. Yo make a game for a HD consol with the intention of making it look graphicly ipressive. Better the graphics the higher the costs. PS360 have alot better graphics than a wii so cost alot more to make games for. graphics arnt atall evrything but they shore as hell make up alot of the costs XD

Yeah i know my spelling sucks but im dysgraphic so live with it :3

Those are terrible examples

NBA Jam had been hyped up for the Wii since it was introduced. It should have sold a lot more on the Wii considering it was originally supposed to come as a download voucher in NBA Elite 11, which subsequently was cancelled, so instead of a PSN/XBLA game, so they threw it on a disc to compete against NBA 2k11 (which even the PSP's version outsold the Wii's version of NBA jam..)

As for No More Heroes, what did you expect? It's a 3 year old game where ther remake didn't really blow anybody away graphically and there was even enough time to squeeze out a sequel to the original before the HD version was released. And to be honest, there is only a 4 thousand gap that exists between the PS3 version that could disappear when Move controls have been implimented.

Overall I agree with the idea behind this thread, I just think the examples aren't really supportive of anything. x.o

It was hyped at first but EA screwed it up over the year before its release, so no it really shouldnt have done more. The hype that was there at first had long went away from their horrible mismanagement of the title.  Its really a shame Ive enjoyed it. I am still unaware of what the HD consoles even ended up getting on there disc.

I completely agree.  So did I until my PC fried.  I always meant to replace it but really, aside from games my laptop does everything I need, heck, my phone practically does everything I need, I just can't justify the cost of a gaming PC, or even a PC in general.   While it may be infinitely better than a 360, 360s are relatively cheap and don't need graphic upgrades all the time.

Why not do normal distributions and compare them to find out the answer rather than cherry picking 3 titles?

Tease.

NBA Jam on Wii is a case study in how not to handle your IP on the platform.  Dead Space Extraction's another great example of self-sabotage... EA really doesn't have a clue on the system.

Counter that with Activision's handling of Goldeneye, Capcom with Monster Hunter 3 or Disney with Epic Mickey.  All 3 games were handled pitch perfectly, and for the most part it seems to have paid off.

however, the idea was also to outline the fact that, due to poor decisions on all fronts by companies, the games sell poorly, on all systems. A game needs at least one of the following:

  • Brand Recognition
  • To be good
to be successful at retail. However, the latter, "to be good", only really works with Brand recognition, which is only gained by advertisement, which is maintained by it being good...
By doing none of the above, EA have dug themselves into an insalvageable pit of where none of their games will sell well on the Wii. Yet, due to making the same mistakes on the HD consoles, it sold even worse there!
Overall, if a game has absolutely nothing going for it (i.e. none of the above points) then it will most likely sell better on the Wii. That's my theory behind these numbers anyway!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

NBA Jam was rated as an M game?

In fairness of the conversation, both NMH and Madworld have rubbish graphics. The art styles in both games is subpar compared to richer environments like  RE4: Wii edition or as someone else mention, the Umbrella Chronicles games.

The real bottom line is this: pretty sells. You don't go hit on the girl that's a 5 or a 6 when theres a few 8 or 9s in the place. As said in the OP, both games are very niche and only appeal to a small audience.

Its true though, those who want to make an original Will game that is M Rated will have very little resources and reason to bring the game to the HD system, otherwise they would have done such in the first place and foregone the Wii outright, like many devs have done.

So yeah, I've got round to doing Number 6 now, it's about a HD wii if you're interested (bit shorther than usual, ah well)
