Forums - Nintendo - Against the grain: Why is the Wii so rubbish at mature games?

The Wii's main problem in this area, I believe, is simply imagne.  All the adverts, branding, etc. for the Wii is about family games.  Period.  I've never seen any branding or adverts or any positioning that say - adult or hardcore games.

Technically, the Wii's as capable of supporting such titles as any other platform, but it has a huge disadvantage (relative to its install base) by owner demographic.

My wife, for example, doesn't bat an eyelid at mature games on PS3/360 but basically dislikes the idea of them on Wii and doesn't want us to have mature titles in the house.  The Wii is for the family, for fun, not for playing adult games after the kids have gone to bed.

Now of course, with an install base of 80 million there is certainly a slice of owners up for such titles, but I really think they're in the minority vs those who bought a Wii based on its branding for family games, Wii Fit, etc.

At this point the Wii, I believe, will never escape this branding.

It can support mature titles.  But it'll never see a mature title sell anywhere like they can on the HD consoles.

On the flip side, and I believe backing this up, it's pretty obvious that the HD consoles are unlikely to see a family title sell anything like they can on the Wii.  This may change with Kinect/Move of course, which is part of the reason for their existence - particularly Kinect.

The Wii though has no such easy get out IMHO.  It's whole world conquering image that has driven it to 80 million does not allow it.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Happy games with mushrooms and clouds with smiley faces are enough for me.

Above: Beuli2 likes happy games, although one Metroid Prime here or a COD there are good too.

I'll keep this in mind for my next thread

Although, WHERE WAS YOUR SCORE?

...or have you abolished it after my previous instalment

This thread doesn't need a score. You'll need to improve 10 over this to even have a score.

Bit rough...I thought this was my best one yet, and other people seem to agree...

CURSE YOU AND YOUR UNPREDICTABLE SCORING! YOU SHOU;DN'T BE ON METACRITIC OR GAMERANKINGS!

*AHEM*

Well, it looks as though a planned 5-part series will have to be extended. Thanks Beuli

Too bad my opinion is accepted as fact in such places.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Honestly. it depends on the specific genre/game. To say that Wii can or cannot sell "core" or "mature" games is stupid. If every CoD game till the last one has been handicapped on the Wii, obviously the CoD fanbase will be on PS360. All those small new IPs, if they're not attempting to directly steal from a PS360 fanbase, will almost certainly sell better on Wii than on the PS3 or 360, simply because of the larger base.

And they'll definitely make more profit.

Did you even read my OP?

If so;

I agree with you to an extent. However, what is a "core" game anyway? It all comes down to what gamers view it as, TBF. I'd count brawl, Galaxy, DKCR et al as "core" games, but modern gamers don't se it this way due it not having guns and going "pew pew"

Maybe someone needs to develop what on earth "hardcore" actually is

Hmm...

*scribbles down in ideas pad for new thread"

If not;

Read the OP. Then maybe you'll realise that what I'm saying is games tend to sell worse on the PS360 then the wii.

It's called this; after all, it is "against the grain"!

Well, I did. I was just adding more stuff randomly, :P. I'm serious, xD.

I was just supporting your OP because a lot of people may not find games that sell as little as under 100k proof.

Oh, and that's what I think too, but the reason the term was basically coined this generation was because, well...

"Core game, as opposed to Wii game"

But what is classed as a core game? Surely, in which case, no game is "core" if it comes down to artistic styling, because all games have different looks? And many Nintendo games would be "core" if it came down to difficulty...

I saw this great comic once, well, hear it is. This explains my thoughts exactly

I have this problem with this little game here: http://rickdangerousflash.free.fr/

Above: still the best game of the year.

I should add that the vulume of m rated games on the other systems increase sales, but the costs are so high that only a few make money, and that only a few really sell that well anyway.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I wonder how big the development budget for The Last Story and Xenoblade are.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

the reason its hard to find in your country is because it isnt released outside japan yet lol

2. There has been no advertising for the Wii version. Ever

--------------------------

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/47589/nba-jam/

First 4 weeks for PS3: 27,507

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/42594/nba-jam/

First 4 weeks for Wii: 69,874

Difference- Wii has sold 240% more by this time than the HD versions

--------------------------

2. No More Heroes

First, let's just remember the outcry there was for this game being on the PS3...

Remembered? OK, here's the Japan-numbers

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/40816/no-more-heroes-heroes-paradise/

PS3 version (first 10 weeks): 25,289

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/7667/no-more-heroes/

Wii version (first 10 weeks): 35,532

Hindsight is a wonderful thing Sega...but Madworld was niche on the Wii, and will be niche anywhere else. You should be thankful Wii development costs are so much lower, because 500k isn't a flop, they'd have made money. Developers won't port games off Wii when they sell worse anyway...

Clearly these are good sales anyway; after all, 380k for Conduit got a sequel, as did Okami!

Would Madworld have sold better on the PS360? Doubtful, but maybe (5% increase)

Would it have made a profit, like the Wii version? No

World at War had specific Wii advertising, and all the Black Ops commercials I've seen seem to be platform neutral.

For NBA Jam, why do you say HD versions when you ignore the 360 version?  Also 240% more than 27,507 is 93,523.  Not to mention it was supposed to be a stripped down download that came with NBA Elite 11 up until about a month before it released.  But to be fair, the lead up of what features would be in what was a mess for both versions of the game.

No More Heroes.  Once again you ignored the 360, which normally wouldn't mean much in Japan.  However, it was the uncensored version, and that had a very noticable impact on sales.  Plus it is a late port on systems with much smaller install bases, and it sold more than the sequel on the Wii.

As for Madworld, keep in mind that the price collapsed fairly quickly and sharply.  So while the conduit might not have sold as much, it seems like the price has held up much better than Madworld.  Similar case to Mirror's Edge where it sold 2 million, but didn't do great because the price dropped to $20 less than a month after release.

Hard to say, since budget disclosure is so rare among the gaming industry.
