Forums - Sales - copmaring sales numbers can be misleading (a mathematical interpretation)

i just read the thread about wii on pace to outsell the ps2 and what not.  im glad its doing well, but even though it probably will outsell the ps2 that doesnt necessarily sold better.  the global population is increasing everyday, so that means theres more wider range of gamers from which to choose.  so right now theres roughly 80 million wii's sold out roughly 6.88 billion people.  so thats meants less than .0116% of the people in the world own a wii.  now ps2 reached this mark back in 2005.  there was 6.47 billlion people then so this means .0123 % of people owned a ps2.  so yes wii is set to sell more consoles, but that doesnt mean it necessarily is doing better.

this was used to find the pop. in 2005.  you gotta go to the big chart and search http://www.prb.org/pdf05/05worlddatasheet_eng.pdf

You could argue that the Wii is significantly more profitable, adjusted for inflation than the PS1 and PS2 combined. Therefore considering the Wii a more successful console is always a slam dunk.

World recession trumps your population increase.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

As said by the previous poster, the recession trumps population growth and does much more. Add on to that emerging market power and lower launch aligned price point, I'd say Wii's selling twice as "good" as PS2 was selling.

Also, do you have information regarding specific demographics? How many 13-year-olds were there for PS2 to sell to and how many there are for Wii to sell to?

Not just that, Wii has a much higher household to user ratio than PS2. I'm not exactly sure what the numbers were,  but I think it was like 2.2 for PS2 to 3 for Wii? That means more people "own" a Wii than PS2 in every household the console visits.

In the post-industrial world, population is generally growing very slowly or even shrinking.  If I remember correctly, here in the U.K the population growth level is something like 0.4 and the likes of Germany and Japan are seeing their populations shrink.  The countries growing fastest are not mass buyers of consoles, with the exception of the UAE.

Are you sure counting the Earth's entire population as potential video game consumers is a good idea? If you want to use population in an argument you have to look at which markets the consoles are available in, but that would probably just make the Wii look even better I guess (being available in fewer markets than PS2).

You could make that argument if:

1.  You find out where the consoles are sold.  It's pointless to include population where electricity isn't the norm.

2.  You find out the populations where the consoles are sold.

3.  You compare the population in each country where the console is sold and compare it to the PS2 era.

4.  You factor in the recession.  This may be impossible

5.  Find out how many people bought the same console multiple times.  This may also be impossible

6.  Now do the percentage of the population that owns the consoles with all the information you have found included.

You really didn't do a mathematical interpretation, you did multiplication and didn't factor in loads of data.  You would still have to take into account the time-value of money as well.

Selling more=selling better, despite any advantages one might have over the other (advertisement, world popular, ect)

This. The OP is overly simplistic.
