Forums - Sales - Latin American Data Collection / Los datos de América Latina Colección

Well actually the Only 3 latin american countries that have consoles officially released are Mexico , Colombia and Brasil.

Every other Latin american country SW and HW data is irrelevant coz every game and console sold in my country ( argentina ) is imported from USA, so it counts like US SW. And its the same for all the other LA countries excludeing mexico colombia and brazil

Exactly, I'm from Ecuador I resell games that I bought from USA (I believe thats called "gray" market), so that would count as a US software sale.

Its a department store but it sells games too.

Well can you link to it? I seriously couldn't find it - I don't speak or read Spanish so the navigation is hard. When I look for Mexican Walmart on Google it doesnt go to online shopping in the results, only sites concerning their business.

Yes I can, http://www.wal-mart.com.mx/Pages/defaultIndividual.aspx?cat=SuperCenter_MX&category=Individual&ig=Individual-Home

just typed walmart mexico on google, no need to know spanish.

P.S: I'm not from Mexico

BTW, do you intend to make separate charts for South America or at least releasing some numbers sporadically?

yeo so Ecuador doesn't count 'cause the hw and sw are bought from US retailers

Another retailer is Game Rush, by Blockbuster:

http://www.gamerush.com.mx/

It's got 50 stores around Mexico, it is always with a blockbuster.

Another one is Gamers, I dont know much about this store, but I see you already posted its web page.

Another one is Gamers Paradise:

http://www.yourgamersparadise.com/

This one is actually very small, with 24 stores across the country. It mainly buys and sells used games, they also make games exchanges.

There are big stores, that sell lots of products, including videogames; examples of this are:

Walmart (http://www.wal-mart.com.mx/Pages/defaultIndividual.aspx?cat=SuperCenter_MX&category=Individual&ig=Individual-Home) with lots and lots of stores across Mexico

Sears (http://www.sears.com.mx/searssite/) I dont know how many stores they have, but I guess a lot

Mixup (http://www.mixup.com.mx/mixup/) It's the biggest music store in Mexico, it also sells movies, series and videogames. Sometimes it's a grear option, cause it has a lot of stores, sometimes it's cheaper than the other stores, and they usually have the games the day they release. It has 70 stores across Mexico, I Think.

Liverpool (http://www.liverpool.com.mx/shopping/store/) Its a big Department Store. Games and consoles are expensive there (but that happens in almost all of this kind of stores in Mexico). I dont know how many there are... But its quite common across the country.

El Palacio de Hierro (http://www.elpalaciodehierro.com.mx/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategoriesDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-5) This is actually quite expensive...

There are other places like "plaza meave" in Mexico city's downtown... Its a very big place. Its like a shopping center exclusively for gaming. It has lots of stores, some of them completely legal, some of them import games, other ones sell pirate games and refurbished (by them) consoles, there are even some stands that sell stolen goods. There is also Pericoapa and Bazar Lomas Verdes... that are the same thing. I guess most people in Mexico City buy their videogames in such places...

There are other big retailers with lots of stores across Mexico... They sell videogames, but dont really have a special department for videogames, and they release them late, and have very few options (i.e. Comercial Mexicana)

Finally in Mexico, there are lot of people who buy/sells used games, or they exchange them. That's common in lots of videogame forums (e.g. atomix; http://foros.atomix.vg/ ), or some people to people stores like Mercado libre   (http://videojuegos.mercadolibre.com.mx/consolas-y-videojuegos/ ).

I hope this info helps... If you need anything else, I'll be here... If I remember any other retailer here in Mexico i would post it...

That site appears to be offering discounts for hw, and at the current conversion rate Wii is $194 (USA dollars) for instance.

Since you guys are all trying to help I'd like to request that you all list:

1) Major video game retailers in your country.

2) Whether these retailers focus only on games, or whether they focus on electronics, or whether they focus on toys, or whether they focus on general goods.

3) We'd also like links to these stores if they have an online presence.

4) If you guys have time, please provide the number of stores the video games retailers have in your country.

Finally, does Walmart (as it has 1500 stores in Mexico, and over 2000 stores in Latin America) allow users to shop online? I've found a Mexican Walmart website, but there is no online shopping/

I'm from Brazil, I have some information to replay your questions.

1) Major video game retailers in your country.

Brazil doesn't have a major retailer like GameSpot, but there are a lot of small retailers mainly at malls. For examplo, in the nearest mall from house, there are 4 small retailers.

However, there are some sites (that also have physical stores) on the internet that have been selling games with good deals and are also becoming relevant to the market.

But keep in mind that the gray marketing in Brazil is very large, there are tons of small and illegal retailers that have been buying consoles at USA and selling then here (most of the times moded) for a small price tag (compared to the legal retailers).

Moreover, because of the taxes gamers usually (that do not mod their console),  import games from sites like:

http://www.cduniverse.com/default.asp

http://www.play-asia.com/

http://www.estarland.com/

http://www.deepdiscount.com/

Or buy it on-line from steam.

For example, I have 13 Wii games and I bought only 2 in Brazil and most of the people do the same here.

2) Whether these retailers focus only on games, or whether they focus on electronics, or whether they focus on toys, or whether they focus on general goods.

Small retailers (and gray marketing retailers) focus only on games. In all the Brazilian sites that I will list the next question like Amazon, where you can buy anything, but have physical stores as well.

3) We'd also like links to these stores if they have an online presence.

http://www.walmart.com.br/Vitrine/Home/Home.aspx

http://www.americanas.com.br/

http://www.submarino.com.br/

http://www.pontofrio.com.br/

Most of the times the Sony games and consoles that they sell are imported from USA retailers. Actually in these sites your buy a Playstation cheaper than at official Sony's site. Nintendo consoles are officially imported thought Latamel. However, Microsoft imports its own consoles and games to the retailers.

4) If you guys have time, please provide the number of stores the video games retailers have in your country.

I have no idea, but keep in mind that Brazil have a lot of small retailers, they sell illegal imported consoles from USA the consoles without paying any taxes. The PS2 still domains the marketing, and the PS3 will sell very well from the moment the retailers  get used to its jailbreak. While in my local mall I have only 4 legal retailers, there is a street here in São Paulo where are more the 100 illegal retailers. I have already been at Chile, Argentina and Peru so I can assure you that same is valid to they.

Thanks everybody. We're making plans. Brett and I will contact you all as neccessary with more information or small requests for help. We appreciate the help.

Just a info for this part... all consoles and games from Sony selling in these sites not are imported... they are manufactued or distributed by Sony Brazil.

Except (there are exceptions) the games or consoles with the word "Importado"... example:

Final Fantasy XIII Imported: http://www.submarino.com.br/produto/12/21783902/game final fantasy xiii - ps3

Gran Turismo 5 (not imported): http://www.submarino.com.br/produto/12/22239474/gran turismo 5 - ps3 - sony

So the imported one count to US (or EU) but the not imported count to BR... the official figures about God of War III were just from copies distributed by Sony Brazil (not imported).

The Microsoft do the same thing here like Sony Brasil... Nintendo I don't know.

Excuse me, but I know that Mega Imports Comercio Importacao Representacao Ltda was one responsible for importing the PS3 here. There are even people complaining about its 3 months warranty (text in Portuguese). However, since Sony released the console officially in the country probably the sites to adopt the official version with 1 year of Sony's warranty.
