All you do is run and jump?  Did you play for 5 minutes and quit?

RPG elements include a consistent overworld (complete with "dungeons"), experience system for character leveling, exploration based puzzle solving (though that's more of a JRPG trope), heavy NPC interaction, multiple party members, complex subsystems (cooking, cards, etc), a currency system, inventory system (complete with spell/healing/boosting items)... still waiting on that RPG definition btw...

Why not count Zelda then?

Zelda has its own genre: Zelda genre.

I disagree.  Zelda is the seminal Action/RPG.

Actually is an Action Adventure. There are some RPG elements, and you can find better on Zelda II, but the other games not to much.

Also, Okami was a game in the Zelda genre.

Hmmm... like Metal Gear, Tomb Raider, DMC?

Nah, I don't think so, personally.  Though it does straddle the fence and blur the line between Adventure and RPG - I think it qualifies as a hybrid of the two genres.

But I don't wanna turn this thread into a discussion of Zelda's genre anymore than we already have, so let's discuss this some other time.

I remember (if I'm not wrong) that Miyamoto said he wants to put more RPG elements in Zelda.

That list clearly shows one of the main reasons why I'm not a multi console owner like I've been before. I've spent most of my money on PC games this gen and I'm glad I did it.

Fable makes this an easy choice. Also the best selling series on that list.

If Fable is included, then Zelda definitely needs to be included.

I dunno, Zelda seems more like Action Adventure to me.

I mean if Zelda is RPG, than I guess so are games like Assassin's Creed and Red Dead Redemption. I could argue those games have RPG elements as well.

Well, when you really get down to it, there's not much in Demon's Souls that makes it more of an RPG than Zelda, aside from its wider variety of weapons, armor, and spells.

I kinda classify them in their own genre, alongside games like Okami.  Third person action games all about going on an adventure, revolving around the exploration of a rich, detailed, and open world, action-based combat, and some light stat usage.  Shadow of the Colossus would also somewhat fit in here, though it lacks in item variety and stats compared to these others.

I can't think of a specific term for this genre, however.  Third Person Adventure, maybe, but that implies something akin to the old PC adventure games of the 90s.  Honestly, just straight up Adventure would fit perfect, but its already been taken.  =/

Whatever you want to call this genre, it's my favorite.  And such games are markedly different from most JRPGs and WRPGs, like Lost Odyssey, Fire Emblem, Whight Knight Chronicles, Oblivion, and the Witcher.

I haven't played much of Fable, but I think it would come close to this genre as well, though it has elements putting it a bit more in the WRPG camp, I believe, as well as in the sim camp with Fable III.

It's realtime and in 2D. It's not because you level up that's it's a RPG.

The gameplay is exactly like the platformer genre and that's mostly how I categorize games.

And it's not because it has some RPG elements that it should be considered a RPG.

And games like Kingdom Hearts and Dark Cloud are much more action than RPG.

There can only be one dominating genre.

So RPGs can't be realtime or in 2D (and SPM isn't even in just 2D either)?  Again, can you define "RPG" for the rest of us so I can try to get some idea where you're coming from?

Honestly, the platforming in SPM is so pedestrian and subdued, I wouldn't even call it a platformer, it's really an action RPG with some light platforming (like Zelda II, Faxanadu or Ys III/VI/Origin).  Uncharted or Crackdown has more actual platforming in tem, and I wouldn't call those platformers either.  Hell even some ARPGs (LandStalker, La-Mulana) have a heavier emphasis on actual platforming. I think you just can't get past idea of Mario jumping = platformer...

Tell me what are the RPG gameplay elements then?

Because as far as I know, there are none.

All you do is run around and jump. RPG? No thanks.

Those are not gameplay elements...

The RPG genre is too vague to give a precise definition.

Taken directly from the Super Paper Mario IGN review:

"Really fun and extremely clever. You'll play it as a platformer, but there's a light RPG in place, too."

Boutros, would you consider Muramasa and Odin Sphere RPG's at all?

I don't know what's Odin Sphere but from what I've seen of Muramasa, it certainly isn't a RPG.

if xenoblade comes. Nintendo

If it doesn't

sony.

I'd have to say Sony for Valkyria Chronicles alone, but I really wish there were more RPGs. Looking at my games library, There were way more RPGs on major consoles in the previous generations than this one......I need to get a DS.
