Forums - Gaming - EA: Apple can challenge Sony, MS in console war

I dont want some grossly expensive, white, glossy, minimalist piece of shiny crap with an apple on it anywhere near home gaming thanks.

You bring up a good point. Apple is in the business of selling over priced hardware.

I don't think the masses are known for buying over priced gaming machines (refer to PS3 before $300 price).

99,9999% of the haters don't know shit about Apple and their products.

I rather pay "overpriced" stuff that lasts 10 years instead of a crappy PC that has to be modded every 2-3 years and/or replaced & cleaning up the system all the time.

To be honest everyone posting about is wrong. Apple already has a home console, so the real question is how can they develop and grow from their humble beginnings into something more? What console? iPad console! Video games are already the leading category on iTunes for applications so the quantity of dollars spent on games is pretty clear. So to say that they have to punch their way into the industry is pretty naff, they are already here and they came through Reggie's back door.

At the moment the iPad is just a beefed up phone platform. However im pretty sure that from Q1/Q2 2011 they'll have a significantly more powerful version built up which will be able to output to TV, has a camera and more RAM. This will be the home console to challenge all, you can pretty much call the iPad 1.0 as the beta version.

I'd rather mod every 2-3 years than buy a new the iPhone, iPhone 2, iPhone 3, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2...you get the point. It seems apple is more into just milking the customer rather than giving the option to upgrade and you make that seem like a good thing.

I wouldn't like Apple to get into the gaming industry. They are quickly becoming the new Microsoft of this generation. They definately have the capacity to succeed if they tried. An entire legion of a fanbase... If they were to release a console today, you can bet that 10 million apple fans would run out to the nearest bestbuy or gamestop by the end of tomorrow no questions asked.

They are in the gaming industry, thats why the PSP is the 3rd place handheld.

I love my mac, ive used apple computers since they were using the old g4 procecessor made by ibm, they have always been very solid pieces of hardware but more importantly the software has always been top notch, stable, fluid and very user friendly.  Now i know that most of you (from what ive read) hate apple for some reason or other, but for me their products have been second to none, and if they were to enter the gaming market they would bring one of the best engineering teams in the field of electonics, and im not just talking about product design but technology first and foremost.

You know those wonderful touch screen phones that most of us use(whether its an iphone or not)  apple is the company responsible for mainstreaming that technology.  Their products are inovative, sleek, easy to use and have excellent build quality, and for the very few times i have had to use it the customer service has always been top notch, i don't see how apple entering the console market good be anything but good, through their inovation, design and resources they could push console gaming to a new level and push sony and ms to new hights as well good competion almost always breeds excellent products for the consumer, but for now, Im PS3 all the way.

No offence but you have 2-posts on VGChartz, so I take everything you say with alot of salt. Also you are like the only person here who thinks Apple entering is a good thing.

At the OT, I gotta say man EA neglecting Nintendo and only talking about competing with Sony and Microsoft really shows EA still doesn't take Nintendo seriously. I mean you'd think he would at least mention the biggest player in the console industry.

As for Apple being the only company that could enter the console industry and have a chance. I think Activision , EA and maybe even UbiSoft and Sega could if they put all their money and IP's behind it, launch a successful platform. Also other companies like Disney for example if they put their money where their mouth is could enter the industry.

Basically any entertainment company with a few billion to through around and has connections to the games industry could jump in. Sure they'd fight a hell of a fight to get anywhere and not fail but I think Apple isn't the only one who could.

Example Panasonic Jungle, if Panasonic aquired some studios or invested money in bringing exclusive games to a handheld. Even Panasonic could enter the industry. I think OnLive is going to be mildly successful with their platform too. How about a Steam Platform.

Now I think Apple is ill equiped to enter the industry and it would take a take over of a publisher perhaps EA and judging from the statements it is probubly on the table. But I think Activision could do a better job at launching a platform.

So no Apple is not the only company that could enter. Also back to earlier I think Nintendo would be their biggest threat not Microsoft or  Sony.

So thats your argument, ive posted twice so the opinions i have and the facts that i posted have no meaning and no validity in this forum.  I guess if thats what you have then thats what you have, but it seems a bit thin.  Now onto your post, you claimed apple would be ill equiped to jump into the console market, but according to yahoo, apple is the second largest company in the world right now, when speaking of their total assets.  With this kind of funding they really could buy their way into the industry and publishers, I mean isn't this how MS got into the game in the first place, but whether apple does this or not is a different story all together, i think only time, and how much profit can really be made will tell, but i stand by my belief that it would only be good for the console gaming industry..

I hate you platinum, I hate you......PS3 FTW.........PSN ID: Battousai147

Apple would likely win a console race if they ever stepped into. Their appeal is like Nintendo's squared.

Apple wouldn't have to buy their way in. They would have instant expectations of success so people would buy their console and publishers would port their games on the mere fact that they are producing the system. They would have a much easier time than Microsoft also given the fact they already have pre-existing games and network infrastructure to use and they don't have a competitor trying to dominate the market by using razor/blade model consoles and aggressive price cuts to drive other competitors out.

I would like Apple to make a console, like an Ipad like home console. Price it as high as people here are stating, then have success, and after a while gain the perfect monopoly of the industry (sorry nintendo :( ), in this scenario all the haters in this thread would have to either go to PC or buy apple console ^_^

I have to say, some people here are more anoying than so called apple fanboys, which in this site are more or less...none.

On a more serious note, I do think it would be interesting. Really don't mind. If they pose a threat to MS or Sony, well, they may end up with some nice counter attacks. Like the ones they used against Wii, and lots of you praise. -.-
