Forums - Nintendo - No more MOTION CONTROLS for NINTENDO?

Recently, I was listening to an episode of IGN’s Game Scoop podcast. On there, ex-Nintendo editor in chief Craig Harris made an interesting comment that got me thinking. During a discussion about the PlayStation Move’s “modest” debut, Harris brought up how, while everyone is playing catch-up with motion gaming, Nintendo isn’t focusing on that element anymore. The examples he used included nearly all of Nintendo’s major releases for the holiday season, which are mostly traditional games with no special use of the motion controller. Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and GoldenEye are those titles.

Now, of course I realize that there are games that do have special uses of the Wiimote. Games like Epic Mickey and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword feature great use of motion and in a unique way. But looking through a list of Wii releases for the next few months, those are the only two big Wii titles that I personally believe take advantage of the Wii controller. Other high profile titles for the Wii such as Conduit 2 are releases that utilize the Wiimote in a standard way.

If you look at Nintendo’s position at the moment, you can probably see that they are definitely focusing more on their newest handheld device, the 3DS and on 3D in general. Nintendo has working hard to push the 3DS into people’s view than they have with Wii/Wii MotionPlus. I even wonder, is Nintendo done with the Wii?

The system has been out for four years now, and within a year or so, it may be time to start thinking about Nintendo’s next console. The company pushed motion as the next best thing and it worked. Now it has run its course as Sony and Microsoft attempt to play catch up and they move on to bigger and better things (though to be fair, Sony is also working on 3D, just not in the same manner). 3D is what’s next for Nintendo and if they treat it anything like the Wii, it’ll be in the hands of every man, woman, and child about a year after its release. 3D technology has been around for some time, but Nintendo is simply updating it. My question is, what will they do next?

Even with the Wii selling like hot cakes, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword is the only game (announced) that uses WMPlus. As you maybe know, gameplay wasn't to good on Donkey Kong Country Returns 'cause Motion Controls (or at least that was the complain). Games like The Last Story plays with Classic Controller.

Also, Nintendo show us Wii Vitality Sensor a year and a half ago. But we haven't konw anything about it. And finally, 3DS is focusing more in 3D (Capt. Obviousss) than in motion controls.

The Wii succesor will have Motion Controls?

Motion controls were developed for software in their case, and not the other way around. Though it rationally appears that they are obligated to use these controls, internally they see it differently, something that the makers of Move and Kinect fail to grasp

Well said.

We are not going back to classic control again thats for sure.

It won't be extinct as some people like to play some games with it, but motion controls are here to stay.

How exactly is it different from Move and Kinect? I couldn't tell you much about Microsoft, but so far, Lionhead seems to be doing fine without Kinect compatibility in Fable 3. And Sony don't force their studios to do anything. Sony provides the tools and the studios decide what to do with them. No one is forced to do 3D or motion controls or hardware-pushing graphics.

I'm not saying that they're being forced to use the compatibility at all, but that the general mentality of Kinect and Move development seemed to be "okay, here's this hardware, what can we do with it?" as opposed to "I have this idea with a game, how can the hardware R&D guys help actualize it?"

Which, at least for Sony, is the same mentality. It's not about what can be done with the hardware, it's about whether the studios want to do something with the hardware. The studios already working on projects look at it and try to see if it will do anything for their game. If they like what it does, they're free to use it, which is exactly what's happening with Killzone 3 and SOCOM 4.

But they have also gone out and asked around to see if anybody had something they wanted to do with it, that's how they get their launch games, and it would be a pretty horrible decision not to, since they care about selling units in the holidays.

I dont really care what they do, as long as they include BC and someway to transfer your VC/WiiWare games to their next console i will buy it.

But i find motion controls enjoyable, i mean like small things. Like Twilight Princess attacking by shaking the wiimote alot of people did not like it at all but i liked it alot i thought it was a nice little extra compared to attacking with a button press or the spin in Super Mario Galaxy.

What i like about the wiimote/nunchuck combo is that they are very comfortable. With games that don't use alot of IR pointing, you can have your hands in a very natural position (to the side of you) when sitting in a couch or lying in your bed.

I wouldnt want them to do 3D yet though, i bought a new  32" LCD TV like 3 years go and i'm not ready to upgrade until, i dont know atleast 5 years.

I believe that the 'Super Wii' will have such an ability.  I think so as the 3DS can have DSiWare games transferred to it (which brings up the question why Nintendo didn't introduce a similar feature for the DSiXL).

I would also be very surprised if Nintendo didn't include Wii BC, considering how GC BC was apparently quite high up the list when they were designing the Wii.  What I'm not sure will be included is GC BC, depending on the architecture of the console, it could be possible or not.  If not GC on the VC?

If you can emulate Wii, you can emulate GameCube. It would be downright weird of them to do the former but not the latter.
