Forums - General - Why doesn't Canada have Black Friday and US have Boxing day?

As a Canadian I go to both Black Friday sales and Boxing day sales. On Black Friday I always make my annual journey to the US to go on a Christmas shopping spree. I spend but loads of money in America, of course this year I couldn't. The last few years I've noticed that Boxing Day is huge in Canada it is the equivelence of Black Friday in the states. But the States doesn't seem to really celebrate Black Friday.

This year on the news the Government was urging us to not go south of the Border. Best Buy Canada asked Canadians to shop in Canada rather then cross the border. But this gets me thinking with our dollar at pretty much par why doesn't Best Buy Canada or any other major retailer give us Canadian's black friday sales.

The same goes vice versa , why don't american companies take advantage of Boxing day. It makes no sense people get money for Christmas and want to spend it, the day after being the perfect time to have a huge sale. I know from talking with Americans in line at Black Friday that several of them come to Canada to shop on Boxing day.

So if Best Buy Canada is so worried about Canadian's buying products in America for Black Friday, and consumers in the US want sales on boxing day. Why not offer both in both countries? People want a sale before Christmas to do their holiday shopping and consumers want that day after Christmas to splurge on themselves.

In Canada Boxing day is the busiest shopping day of the year, in the US its Black Friday. So as a retailer wouldn't it make sense to take advantage of both?

Rest of the world doesn't have black friday either. It's for the same reason Americans don't use the metric system. They like being special snowflakes and do things differently. Christmas is about shopping and gifts only in US.

Different sets of traditions is the reason why. Black Friday is an American day, and Boxing Day is one of the Dominions of the British Empire.

Boxing Day is more or less the after-sales Christmas clearance Week.... While it is called "Boxing Day" it is something that is several days long, extending from the day after Christmas until New Years.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Beacuse America=Fuck yeah!

Look, I know that doesn't answer your question.  If anything, it probably makes you want to watch "Team America: World Police".  I never claimed to have all the answers, okay.

I dunno. I think Canadians are too polite for Black Friday, are you guys willing to stomp someone to death to get a new TV?

And I think most Americans are holidayed out by the end of Christmas, our Thanksgiving being closer to Christmas. We need the time recuperate for New Year's Eve.

I've never heard of people in the US going to Canada on Boxing day... and I lived in Northern Ohio most of my life.

So that's why the US retailers don't do it.

As for the Candian retailers... I dunno.

Honestly, you get better deals the weekend before X-mas anyway, mostly.  Outside of the super limited quantity door buster deals.

Boxing day is just a lot of sales? We kind of have that... the day after christmas at least has a lot of things marked down(not the extent of Black Friday) and the shops are overloaded

Sig thanks to Saber! :D
