Netflix Changes Coming Your Way

November 22, 2010

Netflix is changing and it is being blamed -- or if you prefer, attributed to -- the viewing habits of subscribers. Today Netflix informed subscribers that soon they would have to pay $1 more a month for the basic one-DVD-at-a-time plus streaming content subscription. The company also announced a $7.99 streaming-only option for consumers. The reason, they say, is that more users are streaming content via various devices -- Wii, Xbox 360, Ps3 -- than watching it via DVDs. The company predicts that by the end of 2010 streaming content consumption will finally outpace disc-based viewing.

While that may very well be true, Netflix's challenge is getting that streaming content to be more robust and current- a complaint voiced repeatedly on its blog today in the midst of this announcement. That being said, you can check out all the changes coming your way by visiting blog.netflix.com.

You know, with more and more subscribers I would hope they could lower the price but I guess not.  At least they're offering a streaming only option now.

Oh, and yeah, I'm guilty of using Instant Watch much more than my discs.  I for some odd reason pay for BluRay access but I've had the same disc for the last 2-3 months and I use Instant Watch nearly every day.

I like having the option for the disc but I may just go for the instant only option.

I have never actually had a disc delivered from netflix. I just stream it on my 360 and pc. My does it on her laptop too

when is it comming to Australia???

just because all the telecommunications companies here are jumping on an digital distribution of movie system i wouldn't mine an netflick type service which isn't here. We have Tivo so hurry up

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

This is essentially what Netflix is attempting to push/gently nudge its customers into doing.

No inventory, no shipping costs (which they absorb as a part of the service), etc. That is a lot of excess they can trim away once they are able to transition to mostly if not all DD content.

For rental services, streaming simply makes more sense unless you happen to live next door to a RedBox.

Damn... I'm also one of the stream heavy, Disc rarely crowd. Still, I like to have the one disc option just for those rare moments I'm really interested in something that's not up there yet.

Same here, there are loads of things I want to watch that aren't on instant watch and probably won't be for a while.

Where did you get this?  Like a week ago I was randomly looking at netflix and they already had $7.99 streaming only option (In the United States), and to get DVD's mailed to you was an additional $2 per month (unlimited, I'm assuming 1 at a time)

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Nice. I rather get streaming only option because I usually get newer releases from the redbox, and thats only a dollar a night vs waiting for netflix to ship the dvd and then send it back.

Does anyone know on the streaming only option if I can watch it on two xboxes at a time? My wife has her own xbox and I was wondering if she can watch a movie while I'm playing Black Ops or some other game.

It's just that simple.

Actually I never used the disc option at first. I even left my queue empty for a while so they couldn't attempt to send me a disc. However now I'm on the 3 disc at a time plan and all on Blu-Ray. I mean if they had a streaming only option at first I probably would never have tried the disc. For now I'll stick with both.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
