The counts are actually supposed to be by year (not total per platform) since an average of games bought per platform per year (total games/total years) owned doesn't say anything in regards to the tapering off of game purchases the higher number of years a consumer has owned their console as suggest by Source.
This is more or less what I'm trying to confirm here as the conclusion was that by the 5th year of ownership, the typical owner more or less stops buying new games for the console (or it trickles down to almost nothing).
I should have posted my own by year, but I simply didn't want to count out everything for each platform by year so I only posted my 2010 totals.

After 5 years, game purchases trickle down to almost nothing? Thats kind of true since most consoles are only mainstream for 6 years or so, and not everyone gets the console day 1. Out of all my current gen consoles, only my DS is 5 years old, and yes my purchases have dropped significantly. I only bought 1 new game this year, and I only plan to buy 4 more in the systems life (Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Okamiden, Golden Sun). Since the 3DS is around the corner, it's unlikely that the DS will see any more lage software support.
I think for all my consoles, I purchased the most games on the second full year owning the console (so between 2-3 years of owning it). When I first get a console, there aren't too many games and they are expensive, then as more games come by prices drop, options open, more games are bought. After 3 solid years, I end up having a substantial collection of games to play, and most new games start to become only sequels, so new game purchases taper off. After about 5 years, the console is done, it's outdated, or at least no more new games interest you anymore.
I mean PS1 in 2000, what else did it have comming? Twisted Metal Small Brawl? Sequel, and not a good one either. PS2 had God of War 2 in 2006, but after that not much (not into Persona). 360's 2011 lineup is also looking a bit dry, and I can't see PS3 having much to offer after fall 2011. Wii too is starting to taper off, yes there is Zelda and Pikmin comming, but is that it??
However this gen may last longer then usualy, maybe 8 years instead of the usual 6. In that case, the trend will be expanded.
