Forums - Microsoft - Has anyone tried taking apart the new 360 controller?

So I have the new 360 with the twisting D-Pad and I like it...except the buttons.  I tried playing Alan Wake today and there are prompts on screen and just like my worry, it takes me some time longer to press the button because I don't have colors.

I have a few extra 360 controllers and I would like to take apart my new controller and just swap the buttons but I'm worried that if I take apart my new controller, what will happen with the D-Pad.

So has anyone taken apart the new controller and put it back together without problem?

Wow the lack of colours really put you off? I don't even look at my controller when playing!!

What's the new DPAD like?

try to memorize the letters instead of the colors much easier.

also i don't think the DPAD will be effected, you are not going to screw it like a furious monster right? , just unscrew it slowly and passionatly , then push her buttons and then color her world, but keep things clean or it will look ugly.

You'll need to pick up a T6 torx security screw driver before you can open it up; standard hex bits that come in security kits won't fit due to the shape of the Xbox controller. The screw recessions in the grips are too deep.

I'm assuming they use the same T6 security bits as the other controllers.

Unless you're just curious to see what the insides look like, you might just be better off color keying the buttons with lacquer paint instead.

I'm just plain terrible at memorizing where the buttons are unless I'm constantly having to press a certain button (say like playing God of War).  I recognize colors a lot quicker than I recognize letters/symbols.

I personally like the D-Pad, it works well.  It's not as good as the PS3 or DS D-Pad still, but I can play Tetris with it now so that's a plus.  I don't know if the controller is worth the $65 they're asking, luckily I got mine for $52.

Ah, didn't realize you needed a specific screwdriver, I'll have to look into seeing how expensive they are.  If I can't find one for more than a few dollars I probably won't bother.

About $5. I don't think that covers shipping though, so look locally if you have a major computer parts store in your area. Radioshack only carries security torx bit kits which have hex key adapters that don't fit unless you're willing to drill out and widen the screw recessions.

Why not get some colored rings that match the normal 360 controller colors and stick them around the 4 buttons?
