Forums - Gaming - Capcom: Fhe future is the past.... or cartridges

From a recent interview.

CVG: What do you think the next generation of home video games consoles will look like?

DR: That's a really difficult one. It is really difficult to say when they put that stake in the ground. If there's a PS4, I don't think it will be that much different from PS3, other than that it will probably stick with Blu-Ray. With MS and with handhelds, there'll be a temptation to move to Flash memory.

I think there may not be an optical disc. I have no inside information at all, I just feel that Flash is so useful now, and the price is coming down so much.

It will be network-based, it will be Flash-based. Disc is expensive, but I don't think Sony can give up Blu-ray. Microsoft I think have a choice. As do Nintendo - and there's a big opportunity there. They already work with cartridges, which is essentially Flash. That's the medium they will use.

intriguing theory due to stuff lik USB flash drives being all the rage these days.

I really doubt the next Nintendo console will be flash memory cards based.

Nintendo might create some proprietary disc with some 25gb...

As for Microsoft I can see them embracing Blu Ray.

What you say sounds logical too, but please allow me to partially believe the "we'll go back to cartridges" theory for nostalgy's sake.

Anyone wishing for Sony, MS or Nintendo to go with optical media rather than flash based storage either:

1. Likes longer loading times

2. Likes pricier consoles

I don't think flash cartriges will be viable due to cost, unless next gen starts in 2014 or something... but damn, I want flash based games over disc based any day.

I now read Alfredofroylan's threads for both his pictures and his misspelled titles.

Keep it up, you're on a roll!

Isolinear chips from Star Trek anyone? They are just glorified USB drives.

With the cost of game development going up will flash memory ever get to the point where it becomes economically viable again? I see more publishers push for Digital Download and streaming over any physical media whatsoever. For them it improves profit margins by getting rid of retailers, they can finally get rid of second-hand sales and control the market pricing better.

Btw, No, I don't think this is that good for consumers as a whole, but that's where I see it heading. Not flash.

That's the problem when you write in a hurry.
