Forums - Sales - Wii Sells 232,000 in October, Places Third Again

You're absolutely right, they are improvements. Nintendo scrapped the SNES CD-Rom because they recognized the pirating problems with that particular medium. I don't blame Sony for completing the project without them. In fact, it was one of the worst moves Nintendo ever made, considering how popular Sony became, especially in the PS2 era.

But to say they were both improvements is not a compliment to Sony. Considering how much time between, I'd SERIOUSLY hope they'd be able to improve on the original design from 2006. The Wii was released 4 years ago, almost to the day. So after 4 years, they improved on the design of the Wii-mote? I'm sorry, I'm not impressed. I AM impressed with what Microsoft did with the Kinect. At least it's new technology. And before anyone thinks I'm a fan boy, I own every system made post Atari 2600. (Yes even the Panasonic 3D0, Neo-Geo, etc..) I own 2 PS3's, (One of the old design, one of the slims) and 6 X-Box 360's. (3 still work, 3 have red-ringed, and of the 3 I have now only one is an older generation) And only 1 Wii. My Wii gets the least play, my 360 gets the most.

I'm just pointing out some FACTS, that people tend to overlook.

Fact: The more systems a company sells, the less households they have available to sell to.
Fact: The less likely a system is to fail, the less they will sell overall. (Try to tell me the 360 doesn't get a ton of extra unit sales from RROD)
Fact: The Sony PS3 is their least innovative system, and the Move improves on 4 year old technology, and barely so, while the Kinect by the 360 is an actual improvement and it's actually innovative.

If not for being the only system with Blue-Ray, (Microsoft failed hard backing HD-DVD instead of getting a Blue-Ray player) the PS3 wouldn't have sold NEARLY the number of units they have.

And btw, the undisputed king of them all is the Nintendo DS/DS Lite/DSi/DSi XL. So Nintendo is FAR from hurting.

Oh, and throw in the fact that Nintendo is the only manufacturer who made money off of system sales right from the start, while the other two were losing money on system sales for a VERY long time.

Don't get defensive. It's just the facts.

The Wii being in third has more to do with Nintendo releasing crappy games than of the HD sucess.

Above: still the best game of the year.

The jump from Eyetoy to Kinect is so incredibly high compared to Wii mote to PS Move.

So there isn't that much of a difference then...

I agree but he said "after 4 years, they improved on the design of the Wii-mote? I'm sorry, I'm not impressed".

well it took xbox 7 years to improve the eyetoy.

Nintendo is going have to do something. Releasing of some of the quality Wii titles that haven't left Japan would be a start. In Japan, I really don't know what they could do at this point. A real console Pokemon game maybe?

That won't do anything. I know a lot of people on the internet want those niche jap games, but they usually sells like crap in the west, and even if they manage to be profitable, in the end they don't change anything sales wise.

Nintendo just need to release a new console soon, maybe next year.

The eyetoy and Kinect are completely different tech, the only thing they have in common is the fact they're a camera. The Move ISN'T that much more impressive than Wii mote, and in fact, isn't Wii motion plus on par with it?

Oh wow I was expecting the Wii to sell 20m plus units every year :P

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

I don't really get how this is news. Both HD systems have BRAND NEW technology that just released, where the Wii hasn't had a really substantial release anytime soon. I'm more impressed that the Wii isn't FURTHER behind.

At this rate, the Wii will be surpassed in 2020. =P

I agree with this.

The PS3 and X360 have had essentially two relaunches with slim models and motion controls.  It's clear the Wii isn't gonna be dominant anymore, but I definitely expect it to hang tough with the competition - meaning Sony nor Microsoft will gain any significant ground.  The Wii won this gen - nothing's gonna change that.

However, with that said, I would like to see Nintendo become a little more aggressive.  Glad to see new colors (red Wii) and new pack-ins.  Nintendo dropped the ball the last couple of years with the sparse line-ups (which we now know was due to putting teams on 3DS software) but I think the Wii will be fine this holiday.
