Forums - Nintendo - Destructoid reviews Sonic Colours, my review, our conflicting opinions...

A lot of people don't want Sonic to be good.

If it features newish gameplay, it's straying too far from what originally made it great.

If it features old-school gameplay then it's stale.

But his review wasn't any of those. He was calling on the game for sticking to what didn't work in other 3D games, while he liked the DS game for sticking to what did work in the 2D games.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

If he gets some goods from the distributor, he gives a good score (look at Darksiders review)

That's not a good argument, as you're just taking one example, and assuming that was the reason.

It's no biggie.

Sterling was handed a copy of Sonic and the Black Knight, and unknowingly reviewed that game.

The thing is that the old-school ones haven't quite managed to recapture the old-school glory. They managed to fall into the trap of modern Sonic game design: believing that the games were actually about speed, rather than their deeper platforming mechanics

...RAGE!!!!!

Whilst DS version isn't bad, it feels a bit...stale IMO.

Also, some of the points in the DS version are minus points for the Wii version!

I'd give Sonic DS a 7.5, and the Wii version now 9.4

9.4 might be a little too high.

I gotta admit I wasnt too crazy about the game since the only experiences I had had with a sonic game had been with secret rings (which was a sour experience) and the original (which I didnt finished enjoyed what I played)

So as a new comer to the series I have to say I´m really enjoying it. I dont think it deserves a 9.4 though, a 85 sounds more apropiate.

the game is very good in 2d though the jumps are a bit floaty, but the 3d not so much. I dont enjoy the bits where the game sort of plays itself like in starlight carnival. and I dont love the camera so much

but the game is very good overall

ot: but that destrctoid review was pretty crappy.

After finishing it, yeah 9.4 perhaps to high, maybe 9.1?

My issue, again, is the floaty jumping. SORT IT OUT! One level (planet wisp Act 3 I think) involved a section of jumping slowly from one tiny platform to the other, whilst collecting the Cube for the end. Needles to say, it wasn't great. BUT, a lot of his argument is unwarranted. I don't mind the score, but back it up with some reasonable logic at least...

Though the Wii version of colors captures those aspects well, at least in the 2D side. The 3D side is a little too close to Unleashed for my liking, though they showed restraint in some spaces

What we need is a new Sonic Heroes but without the switching characters thing (with multiple characters to be certain, Knuckles not getting any love outside of Black Knight is a travesty, but not switch-on-the-fly). Heroes really got it right, taking what was best out of Adventure and Adventure 2 and cutting what people disliked (though i loved all of Adventure 2 with every inch of me), but keeping it fully 3D while still being about the platforming more than the speed

Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 2006 both accomplished what i just said, actually, but they weighed down that focus on good 3D platforming with too much crap (the horrendous aesthetics and the weapons in Shadow, and Silver, the human fricking princess, and the overworld in 06)
