Forums - Microsoft - Windows 7 Phones Selling Out As XBOX 360 Users Go Moblie

Not to be overshadowed by its cousin Kinect, the Windows 7 Phone was released this past Monday, and reports are that it, too, has been selling out. The Windows 7 Phone’s competition is more fierce and daunting, however, as it is directly competing with the iPhone, BlackBerry mobile, and Android.

The features that Windows 7 Phone boasts are directly aimed at Xbox 360 owners, offering Live support and games, as well as Zune support.

The new devices have been selling well, with reports that handsets such as the Samsung Omnia 7 and HTC Mozart, being offered on the Orange network, have already sold out. Demand has been so high that even some Microsoft employees in the UK have yet to receive their handsets, even though Steve Ballmer promised that all the company’s full-time employees would receive their very own Windows Phone 7 handset. According to the Wall Street Journal, Dell is following the same course as Microsoft, and switching their employees from BlackBerrys to WP7

The most important feature, however, is the titular Windows 7 OS.

According to Matthes Derdack, CEO of Derdack, a software company specializing in mobile messaging and texting, that Windows 7 makes the most sense for businesspersons, with such software as Office Hub,which gives access to SharePoint sites and Office documents remotely.

“The basic concept behind Windows Phone 7 promises something new. Instead of having apps for users to access specific services such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, e-mail and SMS, Windows Phone 7 aggregates all activities, feeds and news. This means you can view all available information about a particular contact, task or area of interest in one place, making the phone person- or social-centric, not app-centric. Microsoft itself uses the claim ‘no more in and out of apps’, and if well executed it will be a powerful and intriguing concept. More importantly, the new operating system is clearly differentiating itself from the iPhone and other players with the app concept.”

Great to see Windows phone 7 performing really well. The next financial report will be so much fun to read. To be honest I do not expect huge profits due to high marketing and distribution costs, but this remains to be seen.

If Kinect continues to succeed and WinMo 7 does, too, 2011 will be huge for the EDD and a slap in the face of Goldman Sachs who suggested MS to split this division from the rest of the company.

There are articles on the web saying it only had an opening of 40K and this is apparently bad.

Perhaps it just had a slow start. Anyhow, lets just hope its a much bigger success than the Kin.

Honestly I would buy one if I were American. But as a Canadian Microsoft screwed me over with Zune so I'm not particularily willing to take the risk with WindowsPhone7. I remember seeing an Ad for Zune and I went online and read all these articles. I decided to go Zune instead of I-Pod I went into the store and purchased one for like 159.99$ it was on sale. I got home started using it. It was an amazing device watched South Park on it loaded all my music. But then it happened, three months after I bought it, Microsoft shut down Zune in Canada, they closed the online store and stopped offering Canadian services. I was using Zune Marketplace all the time thats the only thing I truly liked about Zune.

Now my Zune is catching dust somewhere , where ever I stored it. I bought a cheap 15$ MP3 player and to be honest I'm done buying expensive ones. I don't want I-Pod so I'm just sticking to my PSP and hopefully 3DS can play MP3's that would be sweet.

But yah what happens if I buy WindowsPhone7 and Microsoft shuts down all its services like they did with Zune. I'll be up shit creek. Not taking another gamble.

Early reports say it sold 40k on launch. Limited release, parts supply issues, etc.

For a product with a reported $400m marketing budget, this is a botched launch.

In comparison, Google said last month that it was selling 200,000 Android phones a day. And Apple has said that its iPhone sales rate was 270,000 a day.

But give it time. Android didn't exactly explode out of the gates either and it's doing great now. The question is how much room is there for Win7 phones when there are already 2 well established smart phone brands available.

the 270.000 is not the number of iPhones but the total number of 'mobile' devices, including the sales of iPhones AND iPods and iPads.

Well most people who have a phone don't have a smart phone. So I would say theres a lot of room for them if they can convince these people to buy. In any case the funny thing with the Android numbers is that the manufacturers like HTC, LG, Samsung etc are balkanising the OS. They are making it so that it isn't 200k Android handsets, its say 67k HTC, 40k LG, 30k Samgsung etc as phone manufacturers look to customise the look of their Android devices.

Tease.

It seems WP7 is out far too early. It is lacking in almost every respect.
I think for an xbox gamer it is worth watching in the future. Otherwise it doesn't look like it is going to catch up with its competitors for a long time.

That is common business these days thanks to the beauty of the internet.

A lot of devices / products (not just phones) are getting better and better due to updates, patches etc. Look at Android, Xbox Live / PSN, games, Kinect, bluray players etc. Products really evolve these days and I don't expect Windows phone 7 to be any different. Copy / paste and flash support are coming in 2011 for example. That is a major step.

Did you actually read the Goldman Sach's article?

Anyway, this is contrary to what other reports have been saying, but I don't think it has done enough to disrupt the iPhone or Android very much

@ squilliam, even with the different skins, they are still based on Android and even if it does mean that my phone looks different to my friends despite us running the same version, we can still do pretty much the same things, and the Android marketplace is still the same

It is certainly true, MS has a lot of execution power to improve the phone. But I’m surprised at the long llist of shortcomings in WP7 - and while MS has to improve (and even rethink some stuff) the competitors will come out with even more goodies. In particular, look at the speed at which Android is producing new features.
Now, I started listing some of the WP7 shortcomings - but I got tired halfway
(sorry for all the exclamation marks ):
  • Cut/Copy/Paste (really annoying when you need)
  • Customization
    • Ringtones !!!
    • Wallpaper (home screen / lock screen) (in Android you can even put a live widget on these)
    • ...
  • MultiTasking !!!
  • Folders !!! I really like to be able to organize my stuff in categories/folders of my own choice
  • Multiple screens - I actually prefer multiple screens in stead of one long list
  • Browser:
    • HTML5
    • Flash
  • Unified inbox - how bad is that !!! I really hate having to check all my accounts individually
  • threaded email !!!
  • visual voicemail !!!
  • universal search !!!
  • Automatic (continuous) backup of your phone - you have to manually copy files to SkyDrive - although, photos are backedup autmatically
  • Tethering and WiFi hotspot !!!
  • ...
  • ... zzz zzz zzz
