Forums - Microsoft - When branding goes too far... (ESPN branded 360?)

Well, well, what's this? We were just sent this obvious mockup of an ESPN Xbox 360, which our tipster found just hanging out on a Microsoft PR server. Now, this could just be a branding exercise or the remnants of a failed idea, but now that ESPN 3 is live on the Xbox 360 Fall 2010 Dashboard Update, it makes sense for the two companies to explore a branded console -- we know a lot of college students (and Engadget editors) who'd love to ditch their cable and still get ESPN through their 360s. We'll see what comes to pass -- and if Microsoft wisens up and tones down that red.

Is this really going to have any impact on sales whatsoever? I mean... A) It's ugly B) It's selling to "fans" of a television network? I don't recall ever coming into contact with a television network fanboy who would shell out for network branded merchandise. It may have just been a concept or brand mockup but I don't see why they'd have even thought this up. lol

How many years? Double digits?

OT: That is actually a really good looking console. I'd probably buy it.

3/4 years.

If they took the ESPN off, it would look better.

Xbox360 won't be around in 3/4 years...Microsoft will get bored, and release something "new"

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...

Guys (and gals)... this isn't a bash thread or sales thread. It's simply a thread to discuss the lunacy and the ludicrously tragic concept of an ESPN branded Xbox 360

I agree with hatmoza about the tone of color selected. The ESPN branding just looks so out of place on a console. Maybe this would work as a giveaway promotion between ESPN and Microsoft but as a console on store shelves I would go to local gamestores and just point and laugh at the box until I got kicked out.

aside from the disc tray and the power button, this looks awesome.

Well maybe it's only the power button. Shouldn't be all red.

I just realized what the console will look like when on. Maybe they can remove the ESPN stuff and market it as a Christmas edition? haha

It's just like the Twitter/Sky/Facebook ones they did a while back.

They wont be released, it's just to slightly promote the new feature...

If it DOES get released, it will be extremely limited.
