Forums - Sales - Some Early Thoughts on Kinect Performance

Strange scenario for the Kinect launch at my local Media Markt.

I live in a town with less than 40k habitants, so the Media Markt is pretty small. There were about 20 Xbox 360 with Kinect (10 for 4GB and 10 for 250GB) PLUS 5 Xbox 360 250GB and 5 Xbox 360 with 4GB.

There were only 4 (!!!) Kinect standalone units. So I said I preordered mine and the guy walks to the storehouse and brings me my Kinect Kinect Sports (I had both on preorder). There were NO Kinect games on the shelves at all. Seems like they did not do anything to put the games up or to promote Kinect. So I can't even give you my anecdotal evidence.

Again 40k people living here... Might be different 35km away in Hamburg with more than 2 million people.

Media Markt is notoriously moneyhatted by Intel (they NEVER offer PCs with AMD CPUs), maybe they are punishing MS for using an IBM CPU!

Looking at week after week sales it is clear that for every 2 Wii consoles sold 1 WiiFit is also sold. That is $300 for 1/2 of the Wii sales.  We also know that it is very common that people pick iup another controller.  Of course for a new 360 with Kinect purchaser for 2 people no need for 2nd controller and no need for a board for fitness games.

These price comparisons have been 100% BS since 2006 when PS3 owners tried to show the "Value" of a $600 PS3 ... In this case in particular you're forgetting to include the actual fitness game in the price of the XBox 360.

What people price out and purchase will depend heavily on the dynamics and demographics of their own household. Some families may price out the XBox 360 elite, Kinect, 3 controllers, XBox Live for a year and a couple of games; while other gamers may just look at the Basic XBox 360 and Kinect.

Difference is I am not arguing perceived value I am arguing what the consumer is actually doing.  We no most people do pickup a 2nd controller.  Week after week after week WiiFit sales are just about 1/2 of Wii sales.  This shows us that the purchase of the Wii is typically not just picking up the $200 console and heading to the checkout.  Kinect 4GB 360 is setup for you to walk out the door at $300 and being able to play multiplayer games without any additional cost and  $350 with a fitness title.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Of those bundles that are left, which ones are the 250GB version and which are the 4GB version? Since if the $299 version is sold out, but not the $399 version, its selling many copies.

how were people misled by MS, the salespeople should be asking if they have and XBOX 360 so shouldnt really be affecting sales imo

In most stores no salespeople will come to help you unless you explicitly call them. Unless you start examining very expensive items, obviously, in that case they'll nosedive upon you like vultures on a carrion.

But you're missing the point ...

You're assuming someone will see Kinect at $300 or $360 as being equal to a Wii with an additional controller and/or Wii Fit (at $240 to $350) where this may not be the case.

If you look at the purchase of systems from the perspective of a 24 year old woman and then from a 40 year old man buying for his family of 5 they both might include Wii Fit but their total purchase may be drastically different.

You are back to the hypotheticals.  I am talking about what people that have purchased the Wii have done by the weekly sales evidence.  We dont know what purchasing a Kinect are actually doing, but we know what MS is marketing them to do.  MS is telling them when you grab a 360 4GB bundle with Kinect you are set.

I heard there was a guy online who predicted two million Kinects sold in week one!  Pfft.  Some people........

Isnt't it normal for the console maker when an accessory is low in supply to push for the bundles? We have seen this happen in the past. Now there aren't enought kinect to keep with the demand, so imo they are shipping more bundles then they normally would do. I wouldn't be surprised if the ratio was 50/50 or more. Beside everyone knew that kinect would have started by selling to people who already owned an xbox 360. The wii also started that way, usually casual gamers don't rush to buy something on day one.

this has never happened. This is like saying people bought consoles for the controllers inside, once the controller supply ran out.

every single standalone kinect pairs with a 360. On one end, it's perfect synchrony. New users can buy both, 360 users can buy the kinect. Perfect market.

On the other hand you have a bunch of bundles that 360 owners will have to spend double for to get kinect, but new owners will be able to buy it.

In these kinds of pushes, the manufacturer really wants there to be JUST ENOUGH bundles, but plenty more standalones. This might not be the case for microsoft.

Lets wait for the numbers. I don't think anyone has a clue what the reaction is going to be. I think it will snowball. first week ok, second week, better, third week, sold out.
