Forums - Nintendo - Is the 3DS mimicking home console gaming too much?

Based on initial impression, at least, it seems there are more games suited for a home console and very few 'pick-up-and-play' games, the kind that´s perfect for the system´s portable nature....this might well change in the future, but given initial impressions, it seems 'home console games' with the 3D effect are the star of the show for the system.

How do you view that?...if pick-up-and-play games end up taking a backseat to these other games (games like MGS3, Ocarina of Time, 3D Mario, etc..), will you like it or dislike it?...will sales suffer a lot?

I know Nintendo is interested in developing a 2D Mario for the 3DS (as well as a 3D version), etc...but it remains to be seen if the system will be flooded with games that aren´t really a good match for a handheld, throughout its life in the market.

The number of home console-style games surely increased but there are plenty of pick-up and play games announced already.

Nintendo's shown Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Pilot Wings and Mario Kart so far and if they add a level select option to Starfox that would be another pick-up and play style game. We also know there will be a 2D Mario on the 3DS (and it's still funny people doubted it would come after the last 2 games sold more than 15 million units each).

Looking at the 3rd parties there are Professor Layton, Street Fighter 4, Dead or Alive, Super Monkey Ball and Resident Evil: the Mercenaries 3D, which is as pick-up and play as a Resident Evil game can possibly be.

It would be interesting to have a list of all games categorized by how good they fit a handheld console.

So far it looks like the line-up is rather balanced, though. The DS just didn't have many "core" games at first.

Thread killed successfully.

Level up!

Japan's done with consoles.  That's why all the console games are moving to 3DS.

I don't think so.

The "console games" reach a period when they're completely possible on a portable device due to technological leaps over the years.

The 3DS is just capable of bringing an experience on par with the HD consoles, to a portable size. It isn't the consoles fault this happens.

Next gen of home consoles, shall show us something that will only be achieved on mobile devices later on 2016 maybe.

it applies to some console games

but most consoles games are more immersive and which require more time and bigger to explore which is not what handhelds traditional have been doing(not saying that they couldn't do in the future, based on past results)

I agree with this. Japan have always been more technologically advanced than us and if they think Consoles are a thing of the past, it really IS a thing of the past.

that is not necessarily a question of technological advancement, but rather  a question of cultural and social differences.

if you spend 2-4 hours on a train every day to get to work and back, you want to fill that time with something enjoyable, like reading or portable gaming, for example.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Games should always have "pick up and play" qualities no matter what system they are on. If the 3DS games are hard to get into or have inaccessible controls, chances are the system will not sell that well in the long run.

I know im in the minority here, but I'm loving that there "less" pick up and play games. 3DS is exciting me a little, I hated the DSs library of pick up and play games (just some of the games) to me their nothing more than overpriced flashgames, that crap belongs on smartphones. Its why I love PSP, I want to play the GOWs, GTAs(3d ones, not top-down crap) KH, fighting games, on the go. IMHO thats what I always thought portable games should be an extension of the consoles. I appreciate people dont see it like that and like their Nintendogs and what have you. To each his own
